**A folder hides your project. A wall shows it.** 🎨

Six free canvases — but you do not pick by name, you pick by what you are trying to do.

```auto
 folder wall
 ├ notes → [spec]─[idea]
 ├ ideas → │
 └ v2-final → [bug]
```

**You want to sketch a system** → ✏ **[Excalidraw](https://github.com/excalidraw/excalidraw) · 134.5k★**
Hand-drawn, offline, exports clean. It looks human instead of corporate, and nobody ever asked for a login.

**You want a canvas inside your own app** → 🧩 **[tldraw](https://github.com/tldraw/tldraw) · 51.1k★**
A few lines of code and your product has an infinite board. This is the one developers embed.

**You want the board and your notes to be the same thing** → 🗺 **[Logseq](https://github.com/logseq/logseq) · 45.4k★**
Daily notes with a whiteboard on top, one dataset, no copy-paste between them.

**You design and refuse to pay for a seat** → 🎨 **[Penpot](https://github.com/penpot/penpot) · 61.7k★**
An open-source design canvas whose files are open standards — nothing locks you in.

**You are planning your own work, alone** → 🖌 **[Nova](https://nova.lightmode.io) · free, no account**
Tasks, notes and links as objects on a canvas. Aimed at one person’s week, not at a meeting.

**You think in connections, not folders** → 📌 **[Kinopio](https://github.com/kinopio-club/kinopio-client) · 892★**
Spatial notes that feel like a pinboard: place things first, decide what they mean later.

> **Why a canvas beats a folder**
>
> **Why any of this beats a folder:** a folder forces a _filing decision_ — you must name a thing before you understand it. A canvas lets you put it down first and name it afterwards, which is how thinking actually happens.

📌 Start where your mess is: drawings → Excalidraw, product → tldraw, week → Nova.

This framing clicked for me — I always file things away “properly” and then forget they exist. Putting the pieces on a wall first, even messily, makes the connections obvious before I decide what anything is called. The “place it first, name it later” idea alone is worth trying on my next messy project, even if I end up tidying it into folders afterwards.
