# 🧰 Seven Free Cheat Codes for the Subscription-Tired

_for the curious, the tinkerers, the won’t-pay-twice crowd — open any chapter_

**Hit a paywall this week. Hit a “create a free account first” wall the week before. Hit a “you’ve reached your free limit, sign in to continue” wall ten minutes ago.** Same boat as the rest of us.
The internet used to be free, and **most of it still is** — just not where Google ranks first. Seven cheat codes below that quietly replace seven things you’re probably paying for. Plus the bonus folder where dozens more like them live. ↓

* * *

> **01 · 🕵️ that DM from 'Sophia, model, NYC' — is she real? ›**
>
> You know when the photo’s just slightly too polished? Drop it into [**Yandex’s reverse-image search**](https://yandex.com/images/) — the Russian one. It finds faces across the parts of the web Google won’t search: old forums, foreign social networks, the corners scammers recycle photos from. One image in. Every place that face has been online, out.
>
> > 💡 _page looks rough = Yandex being Russian by default. Click the camera icon on the search bar and ignore the rest. The face match works in any language._

> **02 · 📄 the printer manual you lost in 2019 ›**
>
> Drawer full of manuals for stuff you don’t own anymore? [**ManualsLib**](https://www.manualslib.com/brand/) has **three million PDF manuals** across ten thousand brands. Type the model number. It’s there. No ads, no signup, no _“create a free account first.”_

> **03 · 🎟️ skip the search bar — browse 80,000 free apps in ONE URL ›**
>
> Three moves the AlternativeTo search bar quietly hides:
>
> **a) The whole free-app database in one link.** Open [**alternativeto.net/browse/all/?license=free**](https://alternativeto.net/browse/all/?license=free). Every free app the site’s ever indexed, scrollable, no query needed. Filter from there by platform, license, or feature tag. _This URL turns AlternativeTo from a search engine into a database._
>
> **b) Search by feature, not by name.** Type `self-hosted`, `command-line`, `no-account-required`, `portable`, `dark-mode`, `open-source` — finds tools you didn’t know existed because you didn’t know what to call them.
>
> **c) Compare 4 tools side-by-side.** Open any tool’s page → “Compare” button → add up to 4 alternatives → instant feature matrix. Replaces an afternoon of review-article-reading with one screen.
>
> > 💡 _bookmark the browse-all URL. Most “free alternatives” lists give you 5-10 picks. The free-app database behind that URL is 80,000+._

> **04 · 📚 that one paywalled paper you wanted to actually read ›**
>
> Science article links to “the original study,” study costs $40 to read. [**Anna’s Archive**](https://annas-archive.org) is a free search across **95 million academic papers and 63 million books** — paste the title, get the PDF.
>
> > 💡 _.org doesn’t load? Germany and Belgium blocked it in late 2025. Try **.li** , **.gl** , or **.se** instead. Same library, different doormat._

> **05 · ⚡ the Linux command you forgot how to use (again) ›**
>
> Open a terminal. Type `curl cheat.sh/awk` — **full cheatsheet in your terminal** , no browser, no tab. For one-liners, install [**tldr-pages**](https://tldr.sh) once: `tldr tar` gives you the three commands you actually need instead of the eighty-line man page that’s been intimidating people since 1979.

> **06 · 🛠️ the side project you keep abandoning at the signup wall ›**
>
> Built a small thing, hit _“sign up to use the API,”_ quietly closed the tab? Here’s a [**GitHub list of free websites that hand over data with zero signup**](https://github.com/alexandresanlim/public-apis-no-auth-only) — weather, currency rates, country facts, geography, even random jokes if your project needs jokes. Pick one. Plug the URL into your code. Done.

> **07 · 🤖 ChatGPT hit the limit, you still want an AI ›**
>
> Mid-prompt, hit _“sign in to continue,”_ not in the mood. A French cloud company called OVHcloud quietly runs an [**anonymous AI endpoint**](https://endpoints.ai.cloud.ovh.net/) — **no signup, no account, no key**. 2 questions per minute, 40+ models including the big Llama ones. Hit the URL, ask.
>
> > 💡 _want more like this? [Here’s the GitHub list](https://github.com/mnfst/awesome-free-llm-apis) cataloguing every permanently-free AI endpoint going. Last updated this week._

> **🪄 bonus level — want fifty more cheat codes like these? open ONE folder ›**
>
> If those seven were useful, here’s where dozens more like them live. **Detectives, journalists, fraud investigators, and the people who professionally hunt scammers** have been keeping a public folder of free tools for fifteen years. They share it with each other. They never had to hide it from you — most people just never thought to look there.
>
> **Open this:** [**osintframework.com**](https://osintframework.com/)
>
> It’s a tree. Click any branch — username, email, phone, image, document, social, geolocation, public records — and the tools cascade out. Whole thing got updated two weeks ago. Will get updated again next week.
>
> > _(“OSINT” stands for “open source intelligence” — the polite name for “finding anything about anyone using only free public stuff.” Detectives, journalists, fraud investigators, and corporate fact-checkers all live here.)_
>
> For the next layer down — _personal_ working folders of individual investigators — go to [**start.me**](https://start.me). Three worth opening:
>
> - 📌 [**The Ultimate OSINT Collection**](https://start.me/p/DPYPMz/the-ultimate-osint-collection) — 800+ tools, sorted by what you’re trying to find
> - 📌 [**NixIntel’s Resource List**](https://start.me/p/rx6Qj8/nixintel-s-osint-resource-list) — curated by a working pentester
> - 📌 [**Lorand Bodo’s Tools**](https://start.me/p/7kxyy2/osint-tools-curated-by-lorand-bodo) — an analyst’s daily working set
>
> > 💡 _the move: any “free alternative for X” question you’d Google → check this layer first. Fifteen years of head start, no asking permission._
