**Summary:**

* * *

1. **Record Low Numbers**
The latest Big Butterfly Count recorded an average of just seven butterflies per 15-minute observation, marking the lowest count in the survey’s 14-year history.

2. **Declining Species**
Notably affected species include the common blue and small tortoiseshell, with eight of the ten most-seen species showing significant declines over time.

3. **Calls for Action**
Butterfly Conservation is urging the government to declare a “nature emergency” and impose a complete ban on neonicotinoid pesticides, which have been linked to the declining butterfly population.
