# Freedb.org Is Shutting Down

[AmiMoJo](https://developers.slashdot.org/~AmiMoJo) writes: _[Freedb](http://www.freedb.org/), the community-generated database of music CD metadata, is [shutting down on March 31, 2020](https://www.gusnan.se/blog/programming/freedb-is-closing-its-service/). The service was set up as a free alternative to [CDDB](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDDB). Many CD-ripping applications pull metadata from Freedb to save the user having to type it in manually, but the service has some major limitations and has now been superseded by [MusicBrainz](https://musicbrainz.org/)._ This wouldn’t be the first time Freedb shut down. In 2006, the site shut down [due to a disagreement among its developers](https://slashdot.org/story/06/07/03/0055211/freedborg-ending), only to be [brought back to life](https://slashdot.org/story/06/10/05/1712215/freedborg-returns-to-life) a few months later.

It’s unclear why Freedb is shutting down after all these years.
