Hi everyone,

I’m looking for up-to-date recommendations on the best free AI tools for creating a resume (CV) in 2026.

I’d like to find options that are:

Easy to use (I don’t have much design experience)
Quick at generating a professional resume
Preferably with modern templates optimized for ATS (Application Tracking Systems)
That allow editing and downloading the resume for free

If you can share:

Names of tools or platforms
Personal experiences
Tips for improving your resume with AI

I would really appreciate it 🙏

Most “free” resume builders let you build for free and then charge you to download the PDF. That’s the trap. Here’s what’s actually free in 2026 — tested, verified, no surprises at checkout.

> **⚡ Cheatsheet — Every Tool at a Glance**
>
> | Tool | Actually Free? | AI Features? | ATS-Optimized? | Best For |
> | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
> | [**FlowCV**](https://flowcv.com) | ✅ Yes — unlimited PDF downloads, no watermark, no paywall | ❌ AI is paid tier only | ✅ Yes | Best truly free option, period |
> | [**OpenResume**](https://www.open-resume.com) | ✅ Yes — open-source, runs in your browser, data stays local | ❌ No AI | ✅ Yes (U.S. focused) | Privacy-first, zero tracking |
> | [**Rezi**](https://www.rezi.ai) | ⚠ Freemium — free plan has AI keyword targeting + ATS scoring, but limits exist | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (built specifically for ATS) | Best free ATS optimization |
> | [**Teal**](https://www.tealhq.com) | ⚠ Freemium — free tier includes job tracker + limited AI | ✅ Limited | ✅ Yes | Job tracking + resume tailoring |
> | [**ResumeReady**](https://www.resumeready.io) | ⚠ Free to build, **PDF download is paid** | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | AI rewriting (but not free to export) |
> | [**Canva**](https://www.canva.com) | ✅ Free templates + PDF download | ❌ AI needs Pro | ⚠ Only simple templates pass ATS | Visual design, non-corporate roles |
> | [**Google Docs**](https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/?ftv=1&tgif=c) | ✅ Completely free | ❌ No (but paste from ChatGPT/Claude) | ✅ Yes (plain text = ATS loves it) | Simplest possible option |

> **🥇 FlowCV — The One That's Actually Free (No, Really)**
>
> 4.9/5 on Trustpilot from 1,334 reviews. 4.8/5 on Google Reviews. Used by 4 million+ people. Built by a small independent team, not a VC-funded upsell machine.
>
> **What you get for $0:**
>
> - 50+ templates, all customizable
> - Unlimited PDF downloads with zero watermarks
> - No account required to start
> - No credit card, no trial period, no auto-upgrade
> - ATS-friendly layouts
> - Privacy-first — data stays in your browser
>
> **The catch:** One resume at a time on the free plan. Want multiple versions for different roles? That’s the paid upgrade. But for most people, one polished resume is all you need.
>
> > 💡 **Trick:** Use ChatGPT or Claude to write your bullet points first, then paste them into FlowCV for formatting. FlowCV’s free tier doesn’t include AI writing — but you already have AI writing for free in any chatbot. FlowCV handles the part most chatbots can’t: making it look professional and ATS-ready as a downloadable PDF.

> **🥈 Rezi — Best Free ATS Scoring**
>
> Built specifically for beating ATS filters. The free plan includes AI keyword targeting and real-time content analysis — which is the part that actually matters for getting past the robots.
>
> **Free plan gives you:**
>
> - ATS scoring tool (tells you exactly what’s missing)
> - AI keyword scanner that matches your resume against job postings
> - Clean, single-column templates designed for ATS parsing
> - Recruiter-approved layouts
>
> **The catch:** Full AI bullet point generation and some features need the Pro plan ($29/month or $149 lifetime).
>
> > 💡 **Trick:** Run your resume through Rezi’s free ATS checker _even if you built it somewhere else_. Treat it as a diagnostic tool, not just a builder. Build in FlowCV or Google Docs → check in Rezi → fix what it flags → re-download.

> **🥉 OpenResume — Open-Source, Zero Tracking, Zero Cost**
>
> If you don’t trust any company with your personal data (name, work history, contact info), this is the one.
>
> - Fully open-source — [code on GitHub](https://github.com/xitanggg/open-resume)
> - Runs entirely in your browser — nothing gets sent to any server
> - Focused on U.S. job market formatting
> - Simple, clean, ATS-optimized output
>
> **Best for:** People who care about privacy, or want to self-host it.

> **🚫 The 'Free' Trap — Tools That Bait-and-Switch**
>
> This is the pattern: you spend 45 minutes building a resume, click “Download,” and then you see a paywall or a $1.95 “trial” that auto-renews at $25/month.
>
> | Tool | What Happens |
> | --- | --- |
> | **Zety** | Free to build — PDF download needs a $1.95 trial that auto-renews at $25.95/4 weeks |
> | **[Resume.io](http://Resume.io)** | Free to build — download locked behind trial, Trustpilot is full of billing complaints |
> | **Resume Genius** | Same pattern — paywall at download |
> | **ResumeReady** | Free to build and preview — final PDF is paid (their own site says “pay only for the final high-quality PDF”) |
>
> **The test:** Before you start building, search “[tool name] + paywall” or “[tool name] + scam” on Reddit. If the first 5 results are people complaining about surprise charges, pick something else.

> **🧠 How to Actually Use AI for Your Resume (The Right Way)**
>
> AI resume tools are useful, but most people use them wrong. Here’s what works:
>
> **Use AI for:**
>
> - Writing bullet points with specific numbers (“Increased retention by 22%” beats “Improved retention”)
> - Matching keywords from job descriptions (paste the listing into Claude/ChatGPT, ask it to optimize your bullets)
> - Writing the professional summary section (most people can’t write about themselves — AI can)
>
> **Don’t use AI for:**
>
> - Inventing experience you don’t have (recruiters verify, and it’s grounds for immediate rejection)
> - Copying AI output word-for-word (generic phrasing is a red flag in 2026 — hiring managers recognize it)
>
> > 💡 **Trick:** The single highest-impact thing you can do: paste the exact job description into ChatGPT or Claude and say _“Rewrite these bullet points to match this job description. Keep the facts, change the framing.”_ This takes 2 minutes and is the difference between ATS auto-rejection and interview callback. Do it for every single application.
>
> **Formatting rules ATS systems actually care about:**
>
> - Use standard section headers: Experience, Education, Skills (not “My Journey” or “Toolkit”)
> - No tables, no graphics, no icons, no columns (many ATS parsers break on multi-column layouts)
> - Plain text formatting only — bold is fine, fancy fonts are not
> - Save as PDF (not Word) for consistent rendering

**Your situation → what to do:**

| You Are | Do This |
| --- | --- |
| 🟢 Want truly free, no surprises | [FlowCV](https://flowcv.com) — build, download, done |
| 🟡 Want ATS scoring for free | [Rezi](https://www.rezi.ai) free plan — use the checker even if you build elsewhere |
| 🔵 Privacy-conscious, trust no one | [OpenResume](https://www.open-resume.com) — open-source, browser-only |
| 🟣 Want simplest possible path | Google Docs template + paste AI-written bullets from ChatGPT/Claude |
| ⚪ Applying to 5+ jobs | Write with AI → format in FlowCV → check in Rezi → tailor per job |
