**Summary:** 1. **Awakening of a Volcanic System** Iceland is set to harness geothermal energy from a volcanic system that has recently become active after 800 years, marking a significant opportunity to explore new energy sources. 2. **Accidental Discovery** The initiative began in 2009 when engineer **Bjarni Pálsson** accidentally drilled into a magma chamber, leading to the development of the **Krafla Magma Testbed** aimed at tapping into magma’s energy. 3. **Groundbreaking Project** This ambitious project plans to create the world’s first borehole directly into a magma chamber by **2027** , with a second borehole expected by **2029** , potentially revolutionizing geothermal energy production. 4. **Extreme Energy Potential** The team aims to produce a new form of extreme geothermal energy that is significantly more powerful than conventional methods, which could benefit the estimated **800 million** people living near active volcanoes. 5. **Global Implications** If successful, Iceland’s endeavor could pave the way for similar drilling projects worldwide, providing a sustainable solution as the planet faces escalating climate challenges. **Read more at:** [CNN](https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2024/10/climate/solutions/iceland-volcanos/)
