Everyone chasing Airtable credits to “afford the AI” is solving a problem they don’t have. **Airtable runs two separate currencies.** Referral credits pay the _bill_. AI credits run _Airtable’s own_ AI. You cannot convert one into the other — [Airtable says it plainly](https://support.airtable.com/articles/3565391278-airtable-credits-overview): _you can’t earn AI credits, only buy them._ Here’s the part that changes everything: **connect Claude or ChatGPT to Airtable over MCP and Airtable’s AI meter never moves.** The thinking happens on your side. Airtable is just the database. It works on the **Free plan** , costs **zero credits** , and there’s nothing to farm. ### 🎯 What you end up with - 🗄 A real database — CRM, content calendar, tracker — that **Claude builds for you** from a sentence - 🤖 An AI that can read it, filter it, write to it, and **create new tables, interfaces and automations** on command - 💸 Zero AI credits burned, on the free tier, forever - 🧮 And _if_ you ever want Airtable’s own AI: the actual math on which lever is worth pulling * * * ## ⚙ The build — about 2 minutes Airtable ships an **official hosted MCP server**. No package to install, no config file, no token to paste, **available on every plan including Free**. **Claude Desktop / claude.ai** `Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector` → paste: ```auto https://mcp.airtable.com/mcp ``` Sign in through the OAuth screen, approve. **Claude Code** ```auto claude mcp add --transport http airtable https://mcp.airtable.com/mcp ``` then `/mcp` to finish the browser sign-in. **Cursor / ChatGPT / anything MCP-capable** — same one URL. Then just talk to it: > _“Build me a content calendar: content, campaigns, channels, team members, production tasks — all linked. Pull my last 20 blog posts in. Then make a dashboard with calendar, kanban and timeline views.”_ It scaffolds the tables, the links, the interface. That’s the official server’s current tool set, not a wish. 🚀 * * * ## 🪤 The three things that break it **❶ “It’s not working” — you reloaded instead of restarting.** Claude Desktop reads connectors on a **full startup only**. Quit the app completely and reopen it. This single missed step is behind most failures. **❷ You’ll be told to install a package that doesn’t exist.** Popular tutorials tell you to put `@anthropic/mcp-server-airtable` in your config. **That package returns 404 on npm.** It was invented by an AI and copied everywhere. The real community one is `airtable-mcp-server` (needs a personal access token) — but you don’t need it, the hosted server is easier and does more. **❸ It has write access, and it uses _your_ permissions.** It can delete records. Point it at a scratch base first, or connect with a read-only account until you trust it. Enough to test Airtable’s native AI properly. ### 🕐 The traps in the referral credits - ⏳ Earned on **Free** , they **expire in 90 days** unless you upgrade to Team - 🔁 They are **not** auto-applied. You must manually transfer them to a workspace before billing - ➡ Transfer is **one-way** : account → workspace. Never back - 🚫 Business and Enterprise Scale accounts can’t earn or use them at all ### 🧮 When farming actually pays Only if you want **Airtable’s own AI** at volume. Then the numbers are real: ```auto Buy credits outright 10,000 credits = $20/mo Team plan 15,000 credits = $24/mo ← more credits, and you get the plan ``` Team is **strictly better value than buying credits alone** — 50% more credits for $4. And every referral is $10 off that bill, so roughly **3 referrals = a free month of Team = 15,000 AI credits** _and_ it rescues your credits from the 90-day expiry. ⚠ **On the farming itself:** referrals must be genuinely new users who accept and verify. Temp-mail domains get rejected, existing accounts don’t qualify, self-referrals fail, and credits already granted can be pulled back along with your account. Finally wired this up today and the “restart Claude Desktop completely” tip alone saved me a headache — I was about to reinstall everything before rereading that part. One small addition from my side: if you’re testing with a base you care about, start with a read-only token or a scratch base for the first round of experiments. I let the agent loose on a test base first and caught it trying to “helpfully” reorganize fields in a way that would have broken my views. Also seconding the warning about the fake npm package — I’ve seen at least three tutorials this week recommending it, and it’s a trap.
