Hello! First, please don’t recommend OBS Studio or any other screen recorder which is not so quick and easy to use.

Now, I’d tried the Canvid license method posted here and it worked so fine that I was completely happy UNTIL it began acting a little weird. I had to reinstall it and it’s a hassle to repeat the whole license method again and it doesn’t seem to work well now. I wish I had Canvid working properly with a license but as I am left with a few popular options (which do not work as good as Canvid), trying them and getting disappointed (Openscreen takes too long to export), I have no other choice but to post here asking for help and any suggestion someone might know or can vouch for. **What I want** **-** **Good and smooth auto-zoom in cursor area** (not like Openscreen’s weird zoom area - I don’t have time to manually edit every auto-zoom area or manually add every custom zoom I need, especially in a 20+ minutes long video - too much cursor movement to select and zoom).

Canvid dying on reinstall + Openscreen’s weird zoom and slow export = you got burned by the wrong tools, not by bad luck. What you actually want: zoom that **follows your cursor by itself** on a 20-min video — zero manual keyframing (no hand-placing every zoom). No OBS.

Here’s what actually does it 👇

> **💀 Why most 'auto-zoom' tools quietly lie to you**
>
> The trap almost everyone falls in:
>
> ```auto
> ❌ "Auto-zoom" that just drops keyframes you STILL fix by hand
> ❌ Openscreen: zoom detection is hit-or-miss on long videos
> ❌ Export time balloons on 20+ min footage
> ❌ License/activation that dies on reinstall ← your Canvid issue
>
> ```
>
> What you’re really after:
>
> ```auto
> ✅ Zoom that TRACKS the cursor (not guessing from clicks)
> ✅ Smooth cinematic glide, not jumpy snapping
> ✅ Holds up on LONG recordings
> ✅ Little-to-zero manual fixing
>
> ```
>
> Keyframe = a point you set by hand where a zoom starts/ends. The whole goal here is to never touch one.

> **🥇 The 3 that actually replace Canvid — pick by your OS**
>
> All three kill manual keyframing — the zoom follows your cursor on its own, even on a 20-minute video:
>
> - **🥇 [FocuSee](https://focusee.imobie.com/)** (Windows + Mac) — AI tracks the cursor and zooms itself; also auto-cuts silences + filler words. Uses normal **account login, so no license file to break on reinstall** — the exact thing that bit you with Canvid. Closest match to what Canvid did.
> - **🥈 [Screen Studio](https://screen.studio/)** (Mac only) — the smoothest cinematic zoom going, ~$108/yr. Heads-up: a few people report audio clipping on long clips.
> - **🥉 [Pane Studio](https://pane.studio/)** (Windows) — auto-zoom + real cursor tracking, with a built-in editor if you _want_ to nudge one moment. Best Windows pick after FocuSee.
>
> **Platform decides it:** on Mac → Screen Studio. On Windows → FocuSee or Pane Studio.

> **🎁 Free / cheap ones worth a 5-min test**
>
> - **⚡ [AutoZoom](https://autozoom.app/)** (Windows + Mac) — sells itself as _“no keyframes, no timeline — it just knows where to look.”_ Spring-motion easing + cursor smoothing. From $7.99/mo or **$69 lifetime**. Aimed straight at the Openscreen manual-zoom headache.
> - **🎁 [Cursorful](https://cursorful.com/)** (browser + desktop) — has a **free tier**. Auto zoom/pan on clicks, follows the cursor, editable after but doesn’t force it on you. Costs nothing to try — start here.
> - **🔧 [ScreenSmooth](https://screensmooth.com/)** (Chrome extension) — auto-zooms on clicks, works **offline** , nothing uploaded to a server. Light and private.

> **🚫 The one that'll waste your time — skip it**
>
> - **[Zumie](https://zumie.io/)** — its real-time auto-zoom **only works on a browser TAB**. For a full-screen, 20-min, multi-app tutorial it makes you add every zoom _by hand_ in the editor — literally the thing you’re running from. $39 one-time, and fine **only** if all you ever record is tabs.

> **📊 All of them side by side (the 10-second scan)**
>
> | 🛠 Tool | 🎯 Zoom | 💻 Platform | ⏱ Long-video | 💰 Cost |
> | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
> | **[FocuSee](https://focusee.imobie.com/)** | AI cursor-tracking | Win + Mac | ✅ built for it | Paid ($69 lifetime) |
> | **[Screen Studio](https://screen.studio/)** | Cinematic, smoothest | Mac only | ✅ yes | ~$108/yr |
> | **[Pane Studio](https://pane.studio/)** | Auto zoom + detail | Windows | ✅ yes | Paid |
> | **[AutoZoom](https://autozoom.app/)** | AI spring easing | Win + Mac | ✅ yes | $69 lifetime |
> | **[Cursorful](https://cursorful.com/)** | Click auto zoom/pan | Browser + desktop | ✅ editable after | Free tier |
> | **[ScreenSmooth](https://screensmooth.com/)** | Click-based smooth | Chrome only | ⚠ shorter clips | Paid (one-time) |
> | **[Zumie](https://zumie.io/)** | Real-time (tab only) | Chrome only | ❌ full-screen = manual | $39 |

> **🎯 Do this before you pay a cent**
>
> - **Test with a 5-min clip first** — record your _actual_ apps and check the zoom tracks smoothly before buying any license.
> - **[Cursorful](https://cursorful.com/)’s free tier = zero-risk first try** — confirm the auto-zoom feel satisfies you at $0.
> - **Dodge fragile licensing** — your Canvid problem. [FocuSee](https://focusee.imobie.com/) and [Screen Studio](https://screen.studio/) use plain account logins, not local activation files that break on reinstall.

> **😎 Where this quietly saves your ass**
>
> - 25-min software walkthrough — hit record, talk, done; the zoom already followed every click, no timeline surgery after.
> - You reinstall Windows and the paid tool just… still works (account login, not a license file that dies).
> - Pumping 10 demo clips a week — no keyframing = minutes per video instead of hours.
> - Building a course on a Mac — Screen Studio makes it look like a $5k production for basically no effort.
> - Broke and need it today — Cursorful records + auto-zooms before you spend a rupee.

Bottom line: **FocuSee (Win/Mac) or Screen Studio (Mac)** are your Canvid replacements; your OS picks the winner. Free-test Cursorful first.

Stop editing the zoom — let the cursor drag the camera, and the boring part records itself. 🖱⚡

@Marie everyone jumped to alternatives, but you said the real thing: you _want Canvid back_. Good news — your license didn’t actually die. When you reinstalled, two things happened: the little activation file got wiped, and the app was allowed to phone its server + auto-update. That’s the “acting weird.” Fix those once and it never breaks again — and the same trick protects any paid tool you use after it.

Here’s the durable way to lock a working Canvid so a reinstall becomes a 10-second restore instead of redoing the whole method:

**1. Get it activated once, then catch what the license actually writes.** Run one of these while you activate — it shows you the exact file/registry key the license lives in:

- Windows → **Regshot** (snapshot before + after, diff it) → [https://sourceforge.net/projects/regshot/](https://sourceforge.net/projects/regshot/) · or **ProcMon** → [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon)
- see live file writes → **FolderChangesView** → [https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/folder\_changes\_view.html](https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/folder_changes_view.html)

**2. Back that state up.** Now a reinstall = paste it back, no method to redo:

- Windows → **CloneApp** one-click backs up an app’s config + registry → [https://www.neowin.net/software/cloneapp-208338/](https://www.neowin.net/software/cloneapp-208338/) (or just `reg export "HKCU\Software\...\Canvid" canvid.reg`)
- Mac → **Macprefs** → [https://github.com/clintmod/macprefs](https://github.com/clintmod/macprefs)

**3. Stop it from breaking itself.** The “weird after a while” is almost always an auto-update. Block Canvid from calling home so it can’t de-activate or update into a brick:

- **SwitchHosts** — point its license/update domain to 127.0.0.1 → [https://github.com/oldj/SwitchHosts/releases](https://github.com/oldj/SwitchHosts/releases)
- or a per-app firewall: **simplewall** (Win) → [https://github.com/henrypp/simplewall/releases](https://github.com/henrypp/simplewall/releases) · **LuLu** (Mac) → [https://objective-see.org/products/lulu.html](https://objective-see.org/products/lulu.html)

**4. Nuclear option — freeze the whole thing.** Run Canvid inside **Sandboxie** (Win) → [https://github.com/sandboxie-plus/Sandboxie/releases/latest](https://github.com/sandboxie-plus/Sandboxie/releases/latest) or a **VirtualBox** snapshot → [https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads](https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads). Any breakage = restore the snapshot, activated Canvid and all, in seconds.

Do steps 2 + 3 and your Canvid problem is gone for good.

> **🆓 …or never fight a license again — free tools that auto-zoom & FOLLOW the cursor**
>
> These track your cursor and glide the zoom on their own — no keyframing, no activation to break, on a 20-min video. **Cap is the one to try first.**
>
> - **Cap** — free, open-source, Win/Mac/Linux; Studio Mode auto-zooms and follows your cursor, exports fast → [https://cap.so/download](https://cap.so/download)
> - **Cursorful** — free tier, no sign-up, auto zoom+pan → [https://cursorful.com/install](https://cursorful.com/install)
> - **Screenity** — free open-source, records right in Chrome, smooth zoom on the cursor → [https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/screenity-screen-recorder/kbbdabhdfibnancpjfhlkhafgdilcnji](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/screenity-screen-recorder/kbbdabhdfibnancpjfhlkhafgdilcnji)
> - Windows-native: **FollowCursor** → [https://github.com/sabbour/followcursor/releases](https://github.com/sabbour/followcursor/releases) · **nuvideo-el** (intelligent zoom) → [https://github.com/kang141/nuvideo-el/releases](https://github.com/kang141/nuvideo-el/releases)
> - Mac free Screen-Studio-likes: **Focuso** → [https://github.com/bailutingyu/Focuso/releases](https://github.com/bailutingyu/Focuso/releases) · **OpenScreen Studio** → [https://github.com/Glyph-Software/OpenScreenStudio/releases](https://github.com/Glyph-Software/OpenScreenStudio/releases) · **Reframed** → [https://github.com/jkuri/Reframed/releases](https://github.com/jkuri/Reframed/releases)
> - Already recording another way and just want live zoom-on-cursor? **ZoomIt** ’s LiveZoom follows the pointer → [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/zoomit](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/zoomit)

A license never “dies” — the proof just gets wiped and the app phones home. Save the proof, cut the call, keep the tool forever.
