I’m honestly frustrated and confused about what happened with my online assessment, and I need some real advice.

Some seniors had suggested using an “always active window” extension for a proctored exam. I set it up before my assessment, but when I tried to tab switch later, the proctoring system still detected it, gave a warning, and the assessment got rejected in the middle.

After that, I tested the extension myself and found that it had stopped working. I also asked GPT about it, and it said Chrome may have patched some of those behaviors and that some browser events are no longer modifiable, plus proctoring systems have gotten more advanced.

I also had this idea about using interview assistant apps like Cluely to take ss and paste it into it, and it will remain invisible from the window, especially since the assessment is just MCQs, but now I’m not sure what’s actually safe or worth relying on anymore. I’m on a Mac, so I can’t really tweak much system-side either.

I have another assessment pending, and I don’t want to get rejected again because of some browser or compatibility issue.

**Point summary:**

- Used an “always active window” extension before the assessment
- Tried tab switching during the proctored test
- Got flagged and the assessment was rejected
- Tested the extension afterward and it seems to have stopped working
- GPT suggested Chrome/proctoring systems may have patched or hardened against this
- Considering interview assistant apps like Cluely, but not sure if that’s a good idea
- Using a Mac, so system-level changes are limited
- Need advice on the safest way to handle the next assessment without technical issues

Has anyone dealt with something similar? What’s the right way to prepare for a strict proctored assessment on Mac without getting flagged?

Edit: People thinking about I am asking this for my upcoming certification exam so no… that was risky and I have no reason to cheat… I am well prepared for it… The above request is for common Procter hiring assessments and interviews.

Straight up, no sugar: that wasn’t a _browser compatibility_ glitch. The extension **was** the flag.

The “always-active-window” trick your seniors passed down got patched out of Chrome — `visibilitychange` / window-focus events aren’t client-side spoofable anymore — so the second you tab-switched, the proctor logged it clean. And an unknown extension just _sitting_ in the browser reads as **unauthorized software** on its own. You didn’t get unlucky. You got caught by design — and the tool that was supposed to hide you is exactly what raised the hand.

The Cluely “invisible to the window” idea is worse: that’s walking straight into the thing they built detection for _next_. Before you burn attempt #2, look at the receipts — these are the **vendors’ own words** , not mine:

## 🧾 The receipts — why every “trick” is now the fast lane to _rejected_

[Expelled from Columbia](https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/columbia-university-student-trolls-big-tech-ai-tool-job-applications-rcna198454). On a job/cert screen a catch isn’t a retry — it’s a rescinded offer with your name attached.

So here’s the version that actually **keeps the offer** : make an honest run _un-flaggable_, and be ready enough that looking away never even crosses your mind. 👇

## 🟢 The clean-run kit — Mac pre-flight (night before, ~10 min, zero skill)

The false rejections that nuke _honest_ Mac users are almost all avoidable environment junk. Kill every one:

- ⚙ **Wipe every extension** — not just the dead one; _any_ unknown extension flags as unauthorized software → [disable other extensions](https://proctorio.com/support/hc/articles/1752024780258-disabling-other-extensions), or just run a fresh **Guest browser profile** for the exam
- 🔕 **Silence the machine** — turn on Do-Not-Disturb [**Focus**](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/turn-a-focus-on-or-off-mchl999b7c1a/mac); one notification pop mid-exam = one flag
- 🖥 **One screen, literally** — unplug any 2nd monitor **and** [disconnect Sidecar / iPad](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/use-your-ipad-as-a-second-display-mchlf3c6f7ae/mac) — an idle iPad reads as a second display and false-flags you _(almost nobody knows this one)_
- 🔗 **Kill Continuity/Handoff** → [turn it off](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/hand-off-tasks-between-devices-mchl732d3c0a/mac) so a buzzing phone hand-off doesn’t trip the session
- 🎥 **Grant perms up front** — System Settings → Privacy & Security → **Camera + Screen Recording** → enable your exam browser _before_ you start ([example: LockDown’s Mac guide](https://support.respondus.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409595659931-macOS-12-0-and-newer-Camera-and-Microphone-Permissions)); a mid-exam permission prompt is a top failure
- ✅ **Run the equipment check the day before, not 5 min before** — every vendor has one ([e.g. HackerRank](https://www.hackerrank.com/compatibility)); a webcam/mic/network drop is the #1 _genuine_ technical reject there is

Thank you for the response, but I never ask this for certification exam. I am well prepared for that exam. so no, I will not cheat there. There was another assessment I have to complete and that’s why I asked for this question.

I am asking for common hiring assessments and exams.

Got it — and good call keeping the cert clean. For **hiring screens** the tell is the **invite email’s domain** : that’s _which_ test you’ll get, so drill that exact one free beforehand and it’s the same test twice.
