Google’s ambitious robotics project, Everyday Robots, faced a harsh reality check. After seven years and a significant investment, the tech giant shut down the project earlier this year. Here’s why:

1. **Overhyped Goals**
Google’s focus on “end-to-end” AI learning for robots proved too ambitious. The goal was to have robots autonomously learn and perform complex tasks, but the reality was far from it. The project struggled with practical implementations and was eventually discontinued in February 2023.

2. **The Long Road Ahead**
Building versatile, AI-powered robots is a lot more complex than anticipated. According to Hans Peter Brondmo, former head of the project, achieving robots that can handle a wide range of tasks will require not just AI, but traditional programming and vast amounts of real-world data.

3. **A Hopeful Future**
Despite the setbacks, Brondmo remains optimistic. He believes that while current robotics may not live up to the hype, the need for robots to assist in daily life remains crucial. The industry must balance innovation with realistic timelines and expectations.
