# 🍷 Wine 11 Just Made Dirt 3 Run 678% Faster on Linux — 110 FPS to 860

_The free program that tricks Windows games into running on Linux got a brain transplant. Your $200 old laptop might now out-frame a “real” gaming PC._

**Dirt 3: 110.6 → 860.7 FPS (+678%). Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands: 130 → 360 FPS. Zero custom patches needed.**

Honestly, I’ve been running Windows games on Linux since it felt like performing surgery with oven mitts. [Wine 11](https://www.xda-developers.com/wine-11-rewrites-linux-runs-windows-games-speed-gains/) finally fixed the ugliest part — and it’s baked straight into the Linux system itself now.

> **🧩 Dumb Mode Dictionary**
>
> | Word people throw around | What it actually means |
> | --- | --- |
> | **Wine** | A free program that lets Windows apps/games run on Linux without owning Windows. (Not an emulator — it “translates” instead of “pretending to be a whole PC.”) [More here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_(software)) |
> | **NTSYNC** | The new plumbing that lets game threads talk to each other the fast way, done inside Linux itself instead of duct-taped on top |
> | **FPS** | Frames per second. Higher = smoother. 60 is fine, 860 is showing off |
> | **The kernel** | The core boss of your operating system that talks to the hardware. Getting something baked in HERE = it’s official, not a hack |
> | **Proton** | Steam’s gaming version of Wine — it’s what makes your Steam Deck play Windows games |
> | **Distro** | A flavor of Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc). Like different brands of the same cereal |

> **🍿 How we got here (the short version)**
>
> For 20+ years, the dream was: run Windows games on Linux, pay Microsoft nothing. The problem was always **synchronization** — the boring behind-the-scenes traffic-cop work that keeps a game’s many tasks from crashing into each other.
>
> - Windows does this its own weird way. Linux does it differently.
> - For years, nerds hacked in fake workarounds called **esync** and **fsync** — cool, but you needed a special patched-up Linux to use them.
> - Wine 11 uses **NTSYNC** , which got officially added to the core of Linux (version 6.14). Meaning: no more hacks. It just works. [Phoronix has the deep-dive](https://www.phoronix.com/news/NTSYNC-Drive-Linux-6.14) if you want the gory bits.
>
> okay but seriously — “it’s in mainline now” is the whole story. That’s the difference between a garage mod and a factory feature.

> **📊 The receipts (real benchmark numbers)**
>
> | Game | Before | After | Bump |
> | --- | --- | --- | --- |
> | Dirt 3 | 110.6 FPS | 860.7 FPS | 🔥 +678% |
> | Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands | 130 FPS | 360 FPS | +177% |
>
> The bigger the game leans on multiple CPU cores, the more it wins. Older single-thread stuff barely moves — but modern games? Night and day. [Full Wine 11 release notes here](https://www.winehq.org/news/2026).

> **⚙️ What else changed (not just speed)**
>
> - **WoW64 finally finished** — a fancy way of saying old 32-bit games run cleanly without needing a pile of extra 32-bit junk installed. Simpler setups.
> - **Better Wayland support** — Wayland is the modern way Linux draws stuff on your screen. Smoother, fewer glitches. [What Wayland is](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayland_(protocol)).
> - **You need Linux 6.14 or newer** for the magic. Fedora 42 and Ubuntu 25.04 already ship it. Check yours by typing `uname -r` in the terminal.

> **🗣️ What the timeline's saying**

> - The [NeoGAF thread](https://www.neogaf.com/threads/wine-11-rewrites-how-linux-runs-windows-games-at-the-kernel-level-and-the-speed-gains-are-massive.1695054/) is half “finally!” and half “wait, is my Steam Deck about to get faster?” (short answer: eventually yes, once Proton pulls this in).
> - The [r/linux\_gaming](https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/) crowd is testing anti-cheat games — some now boot that never used to.
> - The catch nobody’s shouting: multiplayer games with aggressive anti-cheat still block Linux on purpose. This speeds up the games that _already_ ran. It doesn’t magically unlock Valorant.

#### Cool. Windows Games Now Fly on a Free Penguin OS… Now What the Hell Do We Do? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

>
> Right now there’s a gap: Wine 11’s speed boost is live, but 90% of casual gamers still think “Linux can’t game.” That gap is your money. Flip cheap, dead-cheap old laptops (2015-era ThinkPads go for peanuts) loaded with Linux + Wine + a curated set of games that now run buttery-smooth. Sell them as “budget gaming laptops” before the mainstream catches on.
>
> 🧠 _Example:_ A 24-year-old repair-shop kid in **the Philippines** buys busted-screen ThinkPads for ~$60 on local marketplaces, swaps screens, installs [Bazzite](https://bazzite.gg/) (a gaming-ready Linux), and lists them on Facebook Marketplace as “runs Dirt Rally + emulators.” Sells at $180. Clears ~$100/unit, moves 8 a month.
>
> > 📈 **Timeline:** First sale in 1–2 weeks. Plateau in ~4 months once local sellers copy you — move upmarket to nicer refurbs before then.

> **🕳️ The Legacy Software Escape Artist**
>
> Tons of small businesses are trapped on one ancient Windows-only program (old accounting apps, custom industry tools) and dread paying for Windows licenses forever. You configure that ONE app to run flawlessly on free Linux via [Bottles](https://usebottles.com/) — and charge a setup fee. You’re not selling code. You’re selling “you never pay Microsoft again.”
>
> 🧠 _Example:_ A 29-year-old freelancer in **Brazil** finds dental clinics still running a 2009 patient-records app. He packages it in Bottles, hands them a one-click Linux install, charges R$800 (~$150) per clinic + a small “if it breaks I fix it” retainer. 12 clinics = steady side income.
>
> > 📈 **Timeline:** First client in 2–3 weeks (cold-DM local businesses). Good for 1–2 years until those apps finally die or go cloud.

> **🎮 The Steam Deck Whisperer**
>
> The [Steam Deck](https://www.steamdeck.com/) runs on Wine’s cousin, Proton. Loads of games “work” but need fiddly tweaks (launch commands, tinkering) to run _well_. Most owners have no patience for that. Become the person who sells tested, copy-paste config profiles for hard-to-run games — a $3 cheat-sheet that saves someone 3 hours.
>
> 🧠 _Example:_ A 22-year-old student in **Poland** builds a Notion page of 40 tested “hard game” configs, sells access for €5 on [Gumroad](https://gumroad.com/), promotes it in Deck Discord servers by helping people free first. 300 sales = €1,500 from a doc he wrote once.
>
> > 📈 **Timeline:** First sales in days. Slow decay as [ProtonDB](https://www.protondb.com/) crowd-sources the same info free — so front-load hard, cash out in ~6 months.

> **📡 The Benchmark Bounty Hunter**
>
> Wine 11 changed the numbers on THOUSANDS of games, and nobody’s re-tested them all yet. Fresh, accurate “does game X run fast on Linux now?” data is gold to a specific crowd (Deck buyers, Linux-curious gamers). Be first to systematically re-benchmark a niche — say, racing sims or JRPGs — and own the search results for those terms.
>
> 🧠 _Example:_ A 26-year-old in **India** picks “flight sims on Linux,” tests 25 of them on a cheap PC, posts clean before/after FPS tables on a simple free blog + YouTube shorts. Ad + affiliate income from people clicking to buy the games he reviews. Small but compounding.
>
> > 📈 **Timeline:** Traffic in ~4–6 weeks as pages index. Real money at month 3+. Dies only if you stop updating after new Wine releases.

> **🛒 The Abandonware Reviver**
>
> There’s a mountain of old-but-legal Windows games (freeware, dev-released oldies, [itch.io](http://itch.io) stuff) that are a pain to run on modern machines. Wine 11 runs a lot of them beautifully. Bundle them into a clean, ready-to-play “retro pack” for Linux + Deck, with each pre-configured. Sell the _convenience_, not the games (only bundle ones you’re legally allowed to redistribute — check [itch.io free game licenses](https://itch.io/)).
>
> 🧠 _Example:_ A 31-year-old in **Indonesia** curates 30 legally-free indie oldies into a one-folder Linux launcher, sells the “tested & tuned” bundle for $7 on [itch.io](http://itch.io), markets in retro-gaming subreddits. Low volume, near-zero cost, pure margin.
>
> > 📈 **Timeline:** First buyers in ~2 weeks. Steady trickle for a year+ since retro demand never dies — just keep adding packs.

> **🛠️ Follow-Up Actions**
>
> | Step | Do this |
> | --- | --- |
> | Check your kernel | Open terminal, type `uname -r` — need 6.14+ |
> | Easiest way in | Install [Bazzite](https://bazzite.gg/) or [Nobara](https://nobaraproject.org/) (gaming Linux, batteries included) |
> | App wrangler | Grab [Bottles](https://usebottles.com/) for per-app setups |
> | Check any game | Search it on [ProtonDB](https://www.protondb.com/) before you buy |
> | Go deeper | Read the [WineHQ AppDB](https://appdb.winehq.org/) for per-game notes |

**⚡ Quick Hits**

| You want to… | Do this |
| --- | --- |
| 🐧 Try Linux gaming with zero pain | Flash [Bazzite](https://bazzite.gg/) to a USB, boot it, test-drive |
| 🍷 Run one Windows app on Linux | Use [Bottles](https://usebottles.com/), one bottle per app |
| 🎮 Know if YOUR game works | Look it up on [ProtonDB](https://www.protondb.com/) |

It’s great to see how WINE has been evolving over the years. What back then could run simple programs now can run AAA games way faster than Windows. (also the things you said like selling laptops with bazzite and emulators is smart)
