Are there any good APKs that are available online but not in PlayStore?

I’m not looking for something specific; I’m just looking for suggestions. I just want to explore something new. They can be anything at all.

visit fdroid, there is some good stuff

“I just want to explore something new. They can be anything at all.”

Perfect framing for this question. The answer isn’t a list — it’s five whole worlds you didn’t know existed.

Most people only pick apps off one shelf. Google’s. Outside that shelf:

:bullseye: Patched YouTubeMorphe
:video_game: Retro handheld gamingObtainium Emulation Pack
:crossed_flags: Japan / Korea / China gamesQooApp
:television: Multi-source videoGrayJay
:package: Direct-from-source updatesObtainium

🪟 What each door actually opens

:bullseye: Morphe — ad-free YouTube + YT Music + Reddit. The 2026 successor to ReVanced (original lost its maintainer; Morphe picked it up).

:video_game: Obtainium Emulation Pack — one JSON file, 50+ emulators install themselves and stay updated. Built for AYN Odin / Anbernic / Retroid handhelds. Works on any Android phone too.

:crossed_flags: QooApp — play Fate/Grand Order JP, Korean gachas, Chinese rhythm games months before they hit the West. No VPN needed for the download.

:television: GrayJay — one app watches YouTube + Odysee + PeerTube + SoundCloud + Rumble in one feed. Built by Louis Rossmann’s FUTO team.

:package: Obtainium — point it at any GitHub release page, it tracks and notifies. Replaces “manually checking 14 repos.”

:warning: First time you tap an APK, Android asks to “allow this source” for the browser you downloaded with. One-time per app, not a permanent risk. Tap yes.

I run Obtainium on every Android device I touch. Drop the Emulation Pack JSON on a handheld, drop Morphe + GrayJay on a phone, and you stop opening GitHub release pages forever.

🗺️ The full map — open this if you want every shelf, the cliff edge, and the non-English scenes

Sideloading just means installing an APK directly instead of through the Play Store. Not sketchy by default. Half the best Android apps live this way on purpose — devs skip Google’s 30% cut, or ship features Play won’t allow (ad-blocking, YouTube patching, system modding).

🎯 Patched YouTube — and why ReVanced isn't the answer anymore

Morphe launched January 2026, made by former ReVanced contributors. The original ReVanced repo by inotia00 got archived in March 2026 — inotia00 himself now recommends Morphe.

If a YouTube version isn’t supported by Morphe yet, Anddea’s RVX fork is the bridge. Keep both in your back pocket.

Same shelf, different shapes:

  • GrayJay — multi-platform aggregator, not a patcher
  • LibreTube — uses Piped backend, different failure mode than NewPipe
  • Tubular — NewPipe fork with SponsorBlock re-added
  • SmartTube — Android TV / Fire Stick / Shield only
🎮 Retro handheld scene — Obtainium runs this universe

Install Obtainium once, paste any GitHub URL, it tracks releases. The Emulation Pack JSON is the cheat code — one import tracks 50+ emulators.

There’s a dual-screen variant for AYN Thor and Anbernic RG DS where Cemu / MelonDS have dual-screen forks.

Layer on top:

🎌 The gacha / JP gaming sideload economy

QooApp has 2M+ monthly active users sideloading region-locked games. TapTap is the sister tool — community reviews + early-access betas.

Most games don’t need a Japanese IP for the download itself.

:light_bulb: Trick: most JP gacha games only check your IP at first launch. Connect to a free VPN once during install, then turn it off. Many never check again.

📺 Multi-source video aggregation

GrayJay by FUTO (futo-org/grayjay-android) plays YouTube + Odysee + PeerTube + SoundCloud + Rumble in one subscription feed.

License is custom (not strictly Open Source per OSI’s definition), but source-available and auditable.

📦 Direct-from-source app management

Obtainium is the practitioner default. Crowdsourced app configs at apps.obtainium.imranr.dev.

Pairs with:

🪤 The cliff edge — September 2026

Worth knowing now so you don’t install something that breaks in 4 months. Google announced in August 2025 that on certified Android (~95% of phones), every installed app needs to come from a Google-verified developer.

Enforcement starts September 2026 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand. Global rollout 2027.

What you’ll be doing Sept 2026
F-Droid as your alt store :cross_mark: F-Droid’s own letter: policy as written ends them on certified devices
Accrescent :white_check_mark: Already registered with Google’s program
Aurora Store (verified-dev apps) :warning: Apps work; getting Aurora itself on certified devices needs the “advanced flow” (24-hour wait)
GrapheneOS / LineageOS / CalyxOS :white_check_mark: Not certified Android — rule doesn’t apply
Direct APK from unverified dev :warning: Power-user “advanced flow” with 24-hour cooldown

:light_bulb: Practical move: if you’ve got a Pixel, GrapheneOS is the durable freedom path. Otherwise — install what you want now while it’s still friction-free.

🌏 Shelves in other languages (the biggest sideload scenes aren't in English)

:china: Coolapk (酷安) — China’s de-facto sideload curation site. Battery analyzers, WiFi sniffers, MIUI ad-strippers, deep system monitors Western lists never carry. Language barrier is the moat.

:china: TapTap — China-first game store, global reach.

:russia: 4PDA — Russian-language modded-APK community. Has its own trust hierarchy, reupload reputation, verification protocols. The largest concentration of “premium unlocked” practice anywhere on Earth.

:indonesia: Indonesian Telegram modded-app channels — Indonesia has 150M+ Android users with the highest sideload rate per capita of any large market. About to become the stress test for Google’s verification rule in September.

You came in to explore something new. You’re leaving with five worlds and four months to wander them before Google flips the switch.

My preferences -

  1. Youtube for background play music, video, audio play and offline download- https://ymusic.io/
  2. Revanced Apps like (adfree Youtube, unlimited google photos storage) -https://revanced.app/
  3. watch tv series and movies online - https://netmirror.gg/3/en

Does Obtainium only contain emulations? What about games for those emulators?

Two myths to smash in one shot — and the truth’s way more fun than the assumption.

Obtainium isn’t an emulation tool. And the games aren’t in anything — they live in the wild, free for the taking if you know which doors to knock on.

Each chapter below clicks open. Skip what you already know. :backhand_index_pointing_down:

🛒 Myth #1 — Obtainium has fuck-all to do with emulation

Obtainium is a universal app auto-updater. Point it at any GitHub release page — Morphe, GrayJay, NewPipe, anything that publishes APKs — and it tracks + installs + auto-updates.

The Emulation Pack JSON I dropped earlier is just one pre-built grocery list someone made FOR Obtainium.

:shopping_cart: Obtainium = the shopping cart. The Pack = one specific list. You can roll the same cart down any aisle in the store.

🎮 Myth #2 — emulators ≠ games (ROMs are a separate beast)

Emulators are the players. ROMs are the cartridges.

The emulator is your SNES. The ROM is the Donkey Kong Country cart you slot into it.

So when you grab 50 emulators via the Pack, you’ve got 50 empty consoles. You still need to feed them the games — and the games (ROMs) come from totally different sites. That’s the next chapter.

🎯 The 4 ROM sites that aren't fucking trash

:mouse_trap: r/Roms Megathread — community-curated, organized by console. Backed by Myrient + Internet Archive. Default starting point for 90% of people.

:mouse_trap: Vimm’s Lair — old-school, well-curated, no torrents needed. Killer for retro stuff up through PS1.

:mouse_trap: Myrient — the archive backbone of the megathread itself. Direct downloads of No-Intro + Redump verified dumps.

:mouse_trap: Emulation General Wiki — the master directory. Every legitimate source, organized per console.

:warning: Hard-pass on any site with “free roms download” in the name + pop-up ads + a fake captcha asking you to “verify you’re human.” That’s malware bait. The four above are what the emulation scene actually runs on.

📱 Android-specific moves (because Chrome will betray you)
  • Use Firefox + uBlock Origin for ROM downloads. Chrome strips uBlock’s full power, so half the sketchy ad scripts slip through.
  • Save ROMs to a dedicated folder like /storage/emulated/0/ROMs/
  • Most Android emulators auto-scan that folder once you point them at it.

:light_bulb: Some Internet Archive collections need a free account to download — high-traffic items got rate-locked to dodge takedowns. See a :locked: lock icon next to the file? Sign in (free), it unlocks.

🏆 No-Intro vs Redump vs TOSEC — the dump quality tiers

When you see one of these tags on a ROM set, it tells you who curated it:

  • No-Intro — verified clean dumps of cartridge games (NES, SNES, GBA, DS, etc.)
  • Redump — same thing but for disc-based systems (PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn)
  • TOSEC — the “everything” archive — less filtered, includes hacks, fan translations, oddities

No-Intro + Redump are gold-tier. Skip anything not from those two for current builds. TOSEC is where you go when you want the weird stuff (Japan-only oddities, romhacks, hidden gems).

⚖️ The legal grey, said straight (no lecture)

ROMs sit in a fuzzy zone. The rule the whole scene agrees on:

If you own the cartridge or disc and dump it yourself → you’re on solid ground.

Own the cart but downloading someone else’s dump because dumping it yourself is a pain in the ass? That’s the standard practitioner stance. The fuzziness lives in the gap between “I bought this game” and “my own dumping setup.”

Don’t own it at all? Full piracy. We both know it. No moralizing here — just being straight about which side of the line you’re standing on.

Simple-pimple: Obtainium = universal app updater, not emulator-only. ROMs = separate downloads, grab 'em from the four sites above. No-Intro + Redump = the gold-tier dumps. Firefox + uBlock for safety.

That’s the whole heist. Go play something. :video_game:
