Do I need a paid plan to use the API? No. Every account receives an API key, 60 RPM, and a daily 50 credit refill on the Free tier. Upgrading increases rate limits and drops an instant credit bonus, but you can always buy extra credits without changing tiers.
How do the bonuses interact with manual credit purchases? Bonuses land the moment you switch tiers. After that, any additional purchase follows the standard $1 = 1,000 credits rule. Everything shows up instantly in the Billing page and the API key manager so you can measure usage in real time.
What happens if I downgrade? You keep the credits you have already purchased. Feature limits will snap back to the new tier, but stored mailboxes, domains, and credits remain accessible until they exceed the capacity of your new plan.
