[Beginner Question] How to target a specific country on TikTok? (Inspired by a post)

  1. Hey everyone,

I’m a complete beginner to TikTok geo-targeting, but I got really inspired by a great post on here a while back that talked about reaching audiences in specific countries (like the UK/US). Unfortunately, I think the author deleted the post before I could take proper notes.

Since I’m starting from scratch, could you guys share the best, currently working ways to target a specific country on TikTok?

    Specifically:

    • Is getting a local SIM card (e.g., UK/US SIM) enough on its own?
    • What else do I need to prevent TikTok from detecting my actual location (VPN/residential proxy, factory resetting an old phone, changing region/language, etc.)?
    • Any common beginner mistakes I should avoid so my account doesn’t get shadowbanned or stuck in my local region’s algorithm?

Any advice, step-by-step guides, or tools you recommend would be massively appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

A foreign SIM card alone won’t trick TikTok’s advanced location tracking. The algorithm ruthlessly cross-checks your internet connection, hardware fingerprints, and system settings.

If even one thing doesn’t match up (like having a US SIM card but your phone’s clock is set to European time), TikTok will immediately lock your videos to your real, local audience. To actually reach a foreign feed, you need a flawless setup that doesn’t leak your real location.

Phase 1: Your Phone and Settings

The first step is completely clearing out any trace of where your phone has been before you try to look like you’re in a new country.

:mobile_phone: What You Need :hammer_and_wrench: How to Do It :brain: Why It Matters
The Phone Use a cheap, secondary phone and completely
factory reset it.
Wipes out any old location data, app history,
or hidden tracking numbers tied to your device.
The SIM Card Put in a physical SIM card from the country
you want to target.
Passes TikTok’s basic cell service check.
You must completely remove or turn off your real, local SIM.
Phone Settings Change your phone’s region, language, and
timezone to match your target country.
Ensures your phone’s internal clock and GPS settings match
the exact location you are trying to fake.

Phase 2: Your Internet Connection

Regular VPNs (like NordVPN or ExpressVPN) will not work because TikTok knows they come from giant data centers and will block your reach. You need an internet connection that looks like a normal person’s home Wi-Fi.

:globe_with_meridians: What You Need :hammer_and_wrench: How to Do It :brain: Why It Matters
The Connection Buy a “Residential Proxy” or a
“Mobile Proxy” for your target country.
Routes your internet through a real home or cell phone
network, making you look like an everyday, local user.
One Account Rule Only use one proxy connection per TikTok
account.
If you run multiple accounts on the exact same connection
and one gets caught, TikTok will ban all of them at once.
The Safety Net Turn on a network “kill switch” on your
device.
If your proxy randomly disconnects,
this instantly cuts your internet to stop TikTok from accidentally
seeing your real location.

Phase 3: Downloading the App and Staying Safe

Being super careful when you download the app and make your account is exactly how you get TikTok to trust you.

:gear: Step :hammer_and_wrench: What to Do :brain: Why It Matters
Downloading Turn your proxy on before you even download
TikTok from the app store.
Makes sure TikTok sees your “fake” location from
the very first second the app installs on your phone.
The Sign-Up Check When signing up,
check the default phone number code (like +1 for the US).
If it shows your real local country code instead, your true
location is leaking. Stop, wipe the phone, and check your proxy.
Warming Up Spend 3 to 7 days just scrolling and watching videos
from your target country before posting.
Makes you look like a real person. If you post a video the exact
minute you make a brand-new account, TikTok flags you as a spam bot.

Build a bulletproof digital identity with a clean phone and residential proxy, and TikTok will push your content exactly where you aim it.

thank you so much !! can u give me the best ( not very expensive ) residential proxies ?

For TikTok geo-targeting, you don’t just need cheap proxies—you need sticky residential proxies. This means the IP address stays exactly the same while you are using the app, rather than rotating every few minutes.

Here are the best budget-friendly options that are highly trusted for social media stealth:

:globe_with_meridians: Provider :bullseye: Best For :dollar_banknote: Estimated Cost :handshake: Commitment
IPRoyal Absolute budget ~$7 per GB None (Pay-as-you-go)
Proxy-Cheap Lowest cost per GB ~$5 per GB None (Pay-as-you-go)
Smartproxy High reliability ~$7 per GB Low monthly subscription
  • IPRoyal & Proxy-Cheap: These are the best starting points because you only pay for the data you actually use. Since you are only using this phone to warm up an account and post short videos, 1 to 2 GB can easily last you weeks.
  • Smartproxy: If you eventually scale up to running multiple accounts and need guaranteed uptime with a massive pool of IPs, this is the best mid-tier upgrade before hitting expensive enterprise prices.

Crucial Setup Tip: When generating your proxy credentials on these websites, you must select “Sticky IP” (sometimes called “Sticky Session”) and set the duration to at least 30 minutes. If your IP address rotates in the middle of uploading a TikTok, the algorithm will instantly flag the account.

Thanks again! I have another question: Does this work on YouTube and blogs too?

The short answer is no—you do not need this complex proxy and hardware setup for YouTube or blogs.

TikTok uses a location-first algorithm, meaning it restricts content based on where your device physically sits. YouTube and Google (for blogs) use content-first algorithms. They care about what your content is and who engages with it, regardless of where your laptop is located when you hit publish. You can safely operate both from your real, local Wi-Fi.

:red_circle: YouTube: The Audience Graph

YouTube does not geofence your uploads. If you upload a video from Asia but optimize it for the US, YouTube will test it with US viewers.

  • Metadata is King: Write your titles, descriptions, subtitles (CC), and tags in the target country’s primary language.
  • Video Location Tag: In YouTube Studio, you can manually set the “Video Location” under the advanced settings for each upload.
  • The Seed Audience: The algorithm learns who to show your video to based on the first people who watch it. If you share your video on a US-based Reddit or Facebook group and they watch it all the way through, YouTube immediately learns to push it to more US viewers.
  • Upload Timing: Schedule your videos to go public during prime time for your target timezone (e.g., 5 PM EST for the US East Coast), not your local timezone.

:memo: Blogs: International SEO

Google Search does not care about your IP address when you write an article. It looks at your website’s technical infrastructure and relevance.

  • Domains: Use a global domain (like .com) or a country-code top-level domain (like .us or .co.uk).
  • Hreflang Tags: This is a hidden piece of HTML code that explicitly tells Google, “This page is meant for English speakers in the United Kingdom.” It is the most powerful geo-targeting tool for websites.
  • Server Speed: Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN) like Cloudflare. A CDN stores copies of your blog on servers all around the world, ensuring it loads instantly for a user in New York, even if your actual web host is in Singapore.
  • Local Backlinks: Earning links from other websites that are already established in your target country proves to Google that your content is relevant to that region.

Save your money and proxy bandwidth for TikTok. For YouTube and written content, put your effort entirely into language, SEO, and uploading when your target audience is awake.

thank you so much !!! another silly question , is it same for etsy shop ? ( etsy doesnt accept my country )

check my post , i did it specifically for this :

@BestMemories already posted the months of testing :pushpin: Targeting UK audiences with a SIM + static residential proxy — a few months of testing, and where it landed — and @Emanuel_Branson covered the phone + sticky proxy stack above. The question still open in here is the Etsy one, and it has a real answer buried in Etsy’s own help centre.

The short version, in four lines:

  • :prohibited: shop will not open → is your country on the Payoneer list?
  • :credit_card: on the list → a Payoneer account, then Etsy signup works
  • :globe_showing_europe_africa: on neither list → a marketplace that takes every country
  • :megaphone: want a country’s feed → buy the placement, not a fake location

:label: Etsy blocks rails, not countries

A new shop can open only where Etsy Payments works, and that is roughly forty countries. Outside them Etsy says temporarily unavailable and closes the form. That is the end of the signup page, not the end of your options.

:credit_card: The bridge almost nobody mentions

Etsy has a formal Payoneer partnership covering sixteen markets, and it was renewed through 2029 two weeks ago.

region countries on the list
Asia Pakistan, India, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Thailand, China*
Middle East & Africa Egypt, Georgia, UAE, Serbia
Americas Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru
Europe Ukraine

*China: existing shops only. Check the page for the current footnote before you plan around it.

If your country is on that list, a Payoneer account is the only thing between you and an open shop — and their receiving accounts are the other half: real USD, EUR and GBP bank details in your own name, which is what a marketplace means when it asks for a bank in a supported country. :credit_card:

:united_kingdom: The organic answer first, because the ads line is not a beginner’s line

There is no setting that picks which country sees a normal post. TikTok says it plainly in its own privacy blog: your location is one signal, and how viewers react to a video carries more weight than your account country or language. So the work is making the video look like it belongs to that audience. Five levers, free:

  • :bullseye: Creator Search Insights — tiktok.com/csi and the same page inside the app. Pick the country, and it shows what people there actually search plus the topics with high interest and low supply. That gap list is your content calendar
  • :musical_note: Creative Center trends, region set to UK — hashtags, songs, creators and videos ranked for that country over 7, 30 or 90 days. Use the sound that is winning there this week, not the one winning globally
  • :round_pushpin: A real location tag — TikTok now runs a Nearby Feed in the UK and Europe, so a location that genuinely belongs to the video is a distribution signal it did not use before. Tag it when the place is part of the story, skip it when the place is irrelevant
  • :one_o_clock: TikTok Studio → Analytics → Followers — top territories and the activity chart. It is the only place TikTok publishes when your audience is online, and posting into that window is free reach
  • :united_kingdom: Write like the audience, not about them — UK spelling, UK references, captions in the same English the audience uses. The classifier reads your text before anyone watches it

Then, if you want to force the country rather than earn it: TikTok Ads location targeting does exactly that, and a small boost on your best organic video is how people test a market before committing to it.

:megaphone: On TikTok, buy the country instead of faking it

That thread never says this one: TikTok Ads lets you pick the country, the city and the language, and a small boost on your best organic video does more for reach than a proxy that has to fool the app every time you open it.

Faking a location changes who sees you. Buying the placement changes who you are shown to, deliberately. :bullseye:

:television: YouTube and blogs

@Emanuel_Branson has this right — they are content-first. Upload from anywhere, write the title and description for the audience you want, and the recommendation engine tests it there. No proxy, no SIM, no factory reset.

If Etsy still says no, and what to do with the store instead

:link: the shops that accept every country What are the best websites where we can set up an online store/shop for free that sells only digital products? - #14 by Prometheus

Payhip, Sellix, Ko-fi, Whop and their fees — all in our own thread.

And one habit worth keeping: build the product page once, then put the same listing on Etsy and two direct stores. One of them stays open no matter what a payment processor decides about your passport.

Etsy is a marketplace, not a licence to sell. :label:
