The Community Debloated Brave Before Brave Did
No rewards. No wallet. No VPN upsell. No AI. Just a browser that browses.
Brave Origin is an upcoming official build from Brave Software that rips out every non-essential feature — rewards, crypto wallet, VPN, AI (Leo), telemetry, news feed, all of it. What’s left is Brave Shields + Chromium + nothing else. Free on Linux, one-time purchase on other platforms.
It’s not out yet — but you can get the same result right now with community tools. Details below.
📋 What Brave Origin Actually Is — Facts Only
There’s been a ton of misinformation about this. Here’s what Brave CEO Brendan Eich confirmed directly:
| Fact | Details |
|---|---|
| What it is | A separate, optional Brave build with all non-privacy features stripped out at the build level — they can’t be turned back on |
| What’s removed | Rewards (BAT), Wallet, VPN, AI/Leo, Telemetry, News, New Tab Page ads — everything that isn’t Shields |
| What stays | Brave Shields (adblocking, fingerprint protection, tracker blocking), Chromium engine, all Chrome extensions |
| Pricing | Free on Linux — one-time purchase on Windows/Mac (not a subscription) |
| Regular Brave changes? | Nothing. Brave stays exactly the same. Origin is a separate product |
| Status | Still in development — no public release yet |
The download link
github.com/brave/brave-browser/releasesis for regular Brave, not Origin. Origin builds aren’t publicly available yet. When they drop, they’ll likely appear as a separate release tag or channel.
⚡ Can't Wait? Debloat Regular Brave Right Now — 3 Tools
Community scripts that disable the same features Origin will remove. They use Chromium group policies — the only way to fully hide features from settings and context menus.
| Tool | Platform | What It Does | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| SlimBrave | Windows | PowerShell GUI — toggle Rewards, Wallet, VPN, AI, telemetry on/off with presets (Standard, Dev, Paranoid, Family) | GitHub |
| brave-debloater | Windows + Linux | One registry file (Windows) or JSON policy file (Linux) — disables AI, Rewards, Wallet, VPN, Telemetry, News, Speedreader, Playlist | GitHub |
| brave-debloatinator | Windows + Linux | Group policy debloater — completely hides features from settings and context menus | GitHub |
How to verify it worked:
After running any of these, open brave://policy/ — you’ll see every disabled policy listed right there.
SlimBrave’s “Paranoid” preset is the closest thing to Brave Origin that exists today — blocks all telemetry, kills Rewards/Wallet/VPN/AI/Tor/Sync, disables autofill, forces Do Not Track, and uses plain DNS. One script, zero leftovers.
🤔 Why Bother? Regular Brave Is Already Private
Valid question. Here’s the real difference:
| Regular Brave | Debloated / Origin |
|---|---|
| Shields ON by default — great adblocking | Same |
| Rewards system running in background (even if disabled) | Completely removed at build level |
| Wallet code loaded even if never used | Gone |
| Leo AI button in sidebar | Gone |
| VPN promo in settings | Gone |
| Telemetry phoning home (even “anonymous” pings) | Gone |
| New Tab Page with sponsored images | Clean blank page |
| ~45MB less RAM from adblock engine overhaul (Jan 2026) | Same benefit + less bloat on top |
The point isn’t that regular Brave is bad — it’s that every background feature is code running on your machine, consuming resources, and potentially talking to servers. Origin/debloating removes the code entirely. Not “disabled” — absent.
Brave still supports Manifest V2 — meaning full uBlock Origin works, unlike Chrome which killed it with MV3. Stack uBlock Origin on top of Shields for maximum blocking without switching browsers.
🚫 What NOT to Do
| Mistake | Why It’s Bad |
|---|---|
| Download “Brave Origin” from random sites | It doesn’t exist publicly yet — anything claiming to be Origin is either regular Brave or malware |
| Use third-party “debloated Brave” installers | Use the tools above that modify policies, not sketchy repackaged builds |
| Assume debloating breaks extensions | Group policy debloating doesn’t touch the extension system — Chrome Web Store works fine |
| Disable Shields thinking uBlock replaces it | They stack — Shields handles network-level blocking, uBlock handles cosmetic filtering. Use both |
Quick Hits
| Want | Do |
|---|---|
| → Run SlimBrave (Windows) or brave-debloater (Linux) | |
| → SlimBrave “Paranoid” preset + uBlock Origin + arkenfox-style flags | |
| → Watch brave/brave-browser for an Origin-tagged release | |
| → Linux gets Origin for free — everyone else pays a one-time fee |
Brave Origin is the browser Brave should’ve shipped from day one. Until it drops — the community already built it.
