Complete beginner with $150-200 to invest HELP ME ! Which freelance skill should I learn first?

Hey onehackkkkk !!!

I want to get into freelancing and make money online, but I’m starting from zero — no portfolio, no clients, no specific skill yet. I have around $150-200 I’m willing to invest and I’m ready to put in the time to learn.

Some context so people don’t suggest stuff I’ve already tried:

  • Etsy isn’t available in my country :frowning:
  • TikTok’s Creator/Beta Creator Program isn’t available where I live and you guessed right youtube don’t work too
  • I already tried Gumroad and making coloring books on Amazon KDP — didn’t make a single penny !
  • I’ve seen plenty of “make money on YouTube” ideas that don’t actually pay out for beginners ( you know )
  • you guys are the best community !!

thanks for your time !!

“Which skill?” is the wrong first question — you don’t guess it, you read it off live demand data, and the $150 buys tools, not a course. But do it in this order — skip Step 0 and you can learn a skill, land a client, then discover the money can’t reach you :backhand_index_pointing_down:

:compass: STEP 0 — can money even reach you? (do this FIRST)

├─ :globe_showing_europe_africa: Payoneer corridor checker — pick your country, see exactly which payout routes work before you commit to any platform. This is the real region-wall, not the skill.
└─ :credit_card: Set up Payoneer (virtual US/UK/EU account details, 190+ countries) — the rail Upwork/Fiverr/Contra pay into where PayPal/Wise often can’t.

:bar_chart: STEP 1 — pick the skill by DATA, not vibes (free, ~5 min)

├─ :bullseye: Upwork jobs → Filters → Proposals “Less than 5” + “Payment verified” → every result = a real paying job almost nobody’s bidding on. Flip the keyword to compare skills.
├─ :magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Fiverr → type a service (autocomplete = what buyers actually search) → filter “New Seller”: if newbies rank on page 1, the niche is breakable.
└─ :chart_increasing: freelancer.com/jobs/{skill} (swap the last word, 5 skills in 5 tabs) · Google Trends (set Region = a paying market, read “Rising queries”)

:bullseye: STEP 2 — the beginner+AI shortlist (demand > supply, global)

├─ :high_voltage: AI workflow automation (Make / n8n) — looks technical, is drag-and-drop; businesses pay $300–2,000 per build, supply is thin.
├─ :clapper_board: Short-form video editing as a service (DaVinci Resolve, free) — :key: your TikTok/YouTube monetization block is irrelevant: you edit a client’s clips and invoice them. :warning: skip CapCut (ByteDance = same region-lock as TikTok).
├─ :robot: AI chatbot setup for small biz — productize it: $250 install + $40/mo retainer.
└─ :prohibited: AVOID as a first move: generic AI writing / logo / transcription (saturated to $5) · data-annotation mills (DataAnnotation/Outlier — PayPal-only, region-locked, ban risk, build no portfolio).

:money_with_wings: STEP 3 — the $150, spent right (:warning: NOT on a course)

The #1 way a beginner turns $150 → $0 is a “guru course.” The exact curriculum is free (freeCodeCamp · HubSpot Academy · YouTube). Spend on the earning engine:
├─ :globe_with_meridians: ~$11 domain at cost (Porkbun, not GoDaddy’s $1 hooks) · :identification_card: $0–19 portfolio (free Contra profile or Carrd)
├─ :wrench: ~$16–20 = one month of your skill’s tool (Envato Elements $16.50 / Make / Gamma — monthly, cancel anytime)
└─ :admission_tickets: ~$15–30 Upwork Connects (sniper-only on the <5-proposal jobs) · :free_button: AI stays free (Claude/ChatGPT free tier; upgrade only after a client funds it) → ~$60–90 spent, the rest is runway.

:rocket: STEP 4 — land the first client (free, no portfolio needed)

├─ :star: Highest-ROI move: a 2–3 min Loom “audit” video showing ONE real business a fix → DM it → “I’ll fix this for $X.” Repeat 10×/day. Beats any portfolio.
└─ :magnet: Contra (0% commission — keep 100%) · r/forhire (free, no Connects) · Apollo.io (free targeted leads)

🧰 More demand tools, skills & the payout fallback

├─ :bar_chart: Glimpse (turns Trends’ fake 0-100 into real search volume) · Exploding Topics (catch a niche before it floods)
├─ :artist_palette: more beginner+AI skills: Gamma pitch-deck design · Notion workspace building for clients (the fix for your Gumroad flop — sell the service, invoice direct, not region-locked templates)
└─ :coin: payout fallback when even Payoneer is blocked: get paid in USDC (Contra supports it) → cash out via Binance P2P (escrow) — borderless.

Don’t pick a skill you like — pick one the data says is hiring, buy the tool not the course, and make sure the money can get home first.
