i dont know if it is just me and i havent searched 1hack to see if anyone else is venting about this so excuse me if there is another post somewhere about this, but Google Gemini even Argon is terrible.
Bruh, where have you been? ![]()
Not just you. I ran Gemini side by side with ChatGPT on a code review task last week - same prompt, same repo - and it silently renamed two variables in its suggested diff without flagging it, which broke the build when I pasted it in. Took me a good hour to trace it back.
That said, it has been surprisingly solid at summarizing long PDFs when I keep the prompts short and narrow. So the quality really swings depending on the task.
Curious: are you on the free tier or Pro, and what kind of tasks have been the worst for you - code, writing, or multilingual stuff? I’ve been wondering whether the regression is model-side or just the default system prompt changing between sessions.
I use it primarily for creating prompts to feed to image generators, and even then, it fights me and tries to create artwork instead of prompts probably 1 out of 10 times.
The other thing I use it for, and it actually does a good job with, is visually analyzing images and creating data that I can then feed to Claude to generate listings on storefronts.
But for coding, Claude all day every day.
Ha, this thread is a mood. I’ll admit I went through the exact same cycle — hyped it up, got disappointed on coding tasks, then almost wrote it off completely.
What saved it for me was honestly just lowering my expectations and using it for what it’s actually good at. Like Grace2077 said, long document summaries are where it quietly shines — I throw messy meeting transcripts at it and it pulls out action items better than anything else I’ve tried. And it’s decent at brainstorming when I need ten rough ideas fast.
For actual coding though, yeah, I reach for something else too. Different tools for different jobs, I guess.
@Grace2077 asked the question everyone should be asking: free plan or paid. Because those are two different machines.
You are not talking to a bad model. You are talking to the cheap one, which runs out of patience around lunchtime.
@starslayer74 and @ai_daily_tools describe the same split from two angles: fine on long documents and transcripts, then it quietly renames variables in your diff. That is the thinking dial, more often than the model itself.
🚦 slow, or "quota exceeded" → the status board, then your own limits
🧠 shallow, lazy answers → the thinking level, then the tier
📚 confidently wrong on facts → grounding, switched off by default
🗣️ "everyone else sees this too" → the rooms where daily users live
🥊 "prove it, don't vibe it" → the arenas and the leaderboards
Slow, or refusing with quota errors
- Google Cloud status — a regional Gemini incident is the first thing to rule out, and it takes ten seconds
- Your active rate limits — RPM, TPM and RPD are three separate walls, and AI Studio shows yours. A free project hitting the daily cap behaves exactly like a broken model
- On the free tier, your prompts are used to improve the product. On paid, they are not. That is on the pricing page in the part nobody reads, next to the numbers. Linking billing moves you to Tier 1 with a $250 cap and no training on your data
Shallow, lazy, “it stopped trying”
There is a dial for how hard it thinks before answering. Gemini 3 decides its own depth by default, and you can raise or lower it — the developer guide has the parameter, AI Studio puts it on the panel.
Set it low and you get confident nonsense, delivered fast. Set it high and the same question gets a real answer. Most people never touch the dial, then decide the engine is broken.
Then check the box: Flash and Pro are different products sharing a name. Same website, different engine. The free one is the small one, and its rate limit decides when you have had enough for today.
Confidently wrong about facts
Grounding with Google Search is a flag, and when it is off the model answers from memory. Turn it on and the same question gets citations instead of confidence.
You wanted to know if it is just you
- r/Bard — the largest room of daily Gemini users. Sort by new for an hour and you will recognise your own complaint, with its fix, from someone who already solved it
- Google’s own AI developers forum — the place where the quirks get named, including which model ignores which instruction
That is the part a benchmark cannot give you: a room of people whose day looks like yours.
And when you want the argument settled
- llm-colosseum ★1,482 — the models fight in Street Fighter 3; the winner is the one that actually decides faster
- Design Arena — same brief, every model builds the UI, you vote
- LiveBench — contamination-free questions, refreshed monthly
- Artificial Analysis — quality against price and tokens per second on one chart
- Aider’s leaderboard — real coding edits, ranked
Your own scoreboard, ten minutes
1 the task you do every day
2 30 pages pasted, ask for the three decisions inside
3 your domain question, where you know the answer
Score 1–5 across the models in AI Studio and OpenRouter. Twelve models, two sittings, one table that is yours.
And if you want to leave the family entirely, 34 providers and 635 endpoints behind one key is the shelf we keep for that exact mood. ![]()
Check the plan. Check the dial. Then complain. ![]()
im on the plus tier
