How to travel internationally the cheapest way possible

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a family trip to Malaysia and want to keep the total cost as low as realistically possible.

I’d really appreciate some practical advice on how to save money on:

  • Flights

  • Budget-friendly hotels or apartments suitable for families

  • Local transportation — public transport vs. taxis/Grab

  • Attractions and activities — which ones are worth paying for and which can be skipped

  • Any other money-saving tricks you’ve personally used

Thanks! Any tip would be hugely appreciated.

Malaysia for a family — the six lines that decide the bill, and the one move that changes each :tiger:

The line What a family pays The move that changes it
:airplane: Flight Four single fares, booked late Alert on the mistake fares, then build the route yourself
:house: Room RM325 a night, 2-bedroom in KL Swap or sit instead of booking, and count the RM10 tax per room per night
:metro: Rides RM55 each from the airport Family Package — two adults, two children, RM120
:admission_tickets: Tickets RM205 a head at Legoland Book 5 days out, or take the free caves, parks and trails
:steaming_bowl: Food RM20–40 a head in a restaurant Menu Rahmah — RM5 set meals at 3,210 outlets
:credit_card: Cash 3–10% lost on the wrong terminal choice Choose MYR, every single time

Read those six and you have the trip. Everything behind them — the levers, the 2026 prices and the link for each — is folded below.

💳 The cash and the data
Where What it is What it gets you
klxchange.com Licensed money changers Better than bank and airport rates — the licensed ones sit in Bukit Bintang, Mid Valley and KLCC
travelcurrencyguide.com ATM behaviour Maybank, CIMB and Public Bank hand over the interbank rate with no operator surcharge, limits RM1,000–3,000
hlb.com.my Dynamic currency conversion Hong Leong’s own guide — always choose MYR, which keeps 3–10% in your pocket
wise.com Multi-currency card Free ATM withdrawals to RM1,000 a month, mid-market rate on top
gxbank.my GX Card Overseas ATM fee of RM0 per its own product sheet
fidelity.com Cash Management debit Reimburses ATM fees worldwide and adds no foreign-exchange margin
celcomdigi.com Tourist eSIM From RM15, unlimited 30-day at RM60, hotspot shared covers the whole family
three.com.hk One Asia roaming SIM A single SIM covering about 22 Asia-Pacific countries, cheaper than buying per country

Two habits that keep the budget flat, both from the local playbook: buy the code or the ticket from the official counter rather than anyone who approaches you, and swim where the lada.gov.my flags and vinegar stations are posted along Cenang — they mark the safe stretches.

Flight alerts, a swap or a swap-free room, Kembara by day and ETS between states, free caves and a RM5 plate — that is a Malaysia trip at Malaysian prices. :tiger:

:malaysia: Malaysia on a family budget — four discounts on one booking

@Stick_Chick — the cheapest trip is not one clever booking. It is four discounts on the same booking, and each one costs nothing to add.

:bus: The buses tourists get wrong — and the one that is actually free

  • GoKL city bus — RM1 a ride. Fifteen electric routes linking KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Chinatown and KL Sentral, 6am to 11pm, air-conditioned. Free for Malaysians, RM1 for visitors — DBKL’s own page · the GOKL app shows live arrival times
  • Penang’s CAT shuttle is genuinely free — it loops the George Town heritage core all day, no ticket, no card
  • KLIA → KL Sentral: RM12 on the Skybus, RM55 on the KLIA Ekspres. For four people the bus saves RM172 each way
  • A Touch 'n Go card bought at arrivals covers MRT, LRT, monorail, KTM Komuter and most buses without queueing for a ticket each time

:no_mobile_phones: Four free tools that beat a data plan

  • Organic Maps — the whole of Malaysia offline, walking and driving routes, zero data. Downloaded before you fly, works in the back seat with no SIM
  • eSIMDB — compares every travel eSIM by country and GB. A local-data eSIM costs a tenth of roaming, and this is the only honest comparison table
  • Wikivoyage — the free travel wiki from the Wikipedia foundation: routes, prices, and what a taxi should cost
  • Atlas Obscura — the free odd sights that no itinerary lists, usually with no entrance fee

:passenger_ship: The wildcard nobody plans for

Repositioning and last-minute cruises. Vacationstogo’s 90-day ticker lists cabins sailing within three months, and a week out of Singapore regularly costs less per person than the return flight. One big memory instead of five small ones. :ship:

:ticket: For anyone holding miles

seats.aero searches award availability across airlines for free — the same business-class seat at a third of the cash price.

:money_with_wings: Get money back on the booking you were making anyway

Never book travel straight from the site. Open ShopBack Malaysia first, then click through to the booking site from there — the booking is identical, and the cashback lands in your account later.

Live rates this week: Agoda 4% (upsized to 16% during campaigns) · Klook 6% · AirAsia 6% · Trip.com 6% · Malaysia Airlines 6% · Easybook and BusOnlineTicket 2.5% · Skyscanner 3.5%.

:admission_tickets: The promos that reset every Friday

  • Klook, every Friday at 12PM — 12% off all activities for Malaysia-issued Visa cards, capped at RM50, minimum RM200. It resets weekly, so the code is never “expired” — Klook Malaysia deals
  • redBus redDeals — up to 25% off intercity buses, and they stack on top of the operator’s own discount: current promos
  • The bank you already have — every Malaysian bank runs attraction discounts. RHB, for example, has 20% off Discovery Park with code RHB20 until 30 November 2026. Check your own bank’s promo page before you buy any ticket. :bank:

:taxi: Getting around for less than Grab

  • InDrive — you name the fare, drivers counter-offer. On short KL hops it lands well under Grab, and for a family of four that is a taxi price with no haggling
  • MyCar — the local alternative, often cheaper at peak hours
  • Touch 'n Go card — buy one at KLIA arrivals. Every LRT, MRT, monorail, KTM and most buses take it, and it stops the per-ride ticket queue
  • KLIA to the city: RM12 or RM55. The Skybus is RM12 and takes an hour; the KLIA Ekspres is RM55 and takes 28 minutes. For four people, the bus saves RM172 each way

:steaming_bowl: Eating very well for RM10 a head

  • Too Good To Go — restaurants and bakeries sell end-of-day surplus for a few ringgit. In KL and Penang it fills a family dinner for the price of one dish
  • Hawker centres and kopitiams — RM8–12 a head for food locals queue for. The mall restaurants cost four times that for less
  • AirAsia Free Seat — twice a year, and the only time regional flights drop below RM100. Set an alert on Secret Flying and you will hear about the next one
