🖱️ MosHover — hover a file in Windows Explorer and it previews instantly

AI-generated summary

:bullseye: What you get: Instant file and folder previews in Windows Explorer simply by hovering your cursor.

:white_check_mark: Start here:

  • MosHover — previews images, PDFs, media, and design files (PSD, AI) on hover.
  • Multipage PDF scrolling — read and copy document text directly from the preview.
  • Preview pinning — keeps the preview window floating while working in other apps.

:toolbox: Also useful:

  • Folder peeking — see directory contents without opening them.
  • Tray settings — customize hover delays and window sizes per file format.

:warning: Watch out:

  • Unsigned binary might trigger Windows SmartScreen warnings during initial setup.

Your Explorer already draws a thumbnail. Hover the file and it can show you the actual thing.

MosHover — instant file preview in Windows Explorer

I built MosHover while sorting hundreds of assets: the slow part is never the editing, it is opening files just to find out which one you are looking at. Now it is hover, look, move on — nothing launches, nothing to close.

:open_file_folder: What it previews

Type Formats
:framed_picture: Images PNG · JPG · GIF · WebP · TIFF · BMP · ICO
:artist_palette: Design PSD · PSB · AI · SVG · EPS · PS
:page_facing_up: Documents PDF · DOCX · PPTX · XLSX · TXT
:clapper_board: Media MP4 · MKV · MOV · WebM · MP3 · WAV · FLAC
:file_folder: Folders what is inside, before you open it

:bullseye: The three that actually buy you time

  • PDFs are readable, not page one — scroll the pages and copy from any of them
  • Design files open by hovering — no Photoshop round-trip for a five-second look
  • Pin a preview — it stays on top while you work in another window

:gear: Install

Download → run it (it lives in the tray) → hover anything. Delay, theme and per-type preview size sit in the tray menu.

:warning: Two honest notes

  • It’s my own tool and not open source, so SmartScreen may warn about a fresh unsigned binary — normal for indie apps, just check the publisher name before clicking through.
  • Windows’ own PowerToys Peek previews images, Office, video and text too — but you select a file and press Space. MosHover’s edge is hover-only, plus PSD/AI/EPS/PS and per-type sizes, in one tray app instead of a suite.

The pin feature is the part I would use most, because it lets me compare a reference file while I work in another window. For sorting a large folder, I would first set a longer hover delay so previews do not pop up while I am just moving the mouse across files. Then I would use the per-type size setting to keep PDF previews large enough to read and image previews smaller, since reading text needs more space than checking a thumbnail. I would also test it on a folder with PSD and AI files, because avoiding a full design app launch for a five-second check is a real time saver. One question I have is whether pinned previews stay visible when Explorer loses focus, since that would decide how useful pinning is for a two-window workflow.

This is the kind of small tool that quietly saves a lot of time. I spend way too long opening files just to check which version is which, especially with PDFs and images. Being able to hover and actually read a bit, instead of guessing from a thumbnail, sounds really handy. The folder preview idea caught my eye too, since I am always digging through messy download folders.

Moshiur Bhai, great work! Keep it up.

What a brilliant little app. I have only had it installed for an hour yet has moved into my top 5 app list with a bullet. Thank you Moshiur and I love the little dedication. You have a great soul.
