No ID & no freezes โ you hold the keys ยท
no crazy fees โ you pick the cheap network
Two walls hit everyone new to crypto: an app that suddenly demands your ID (and can freeze or ban you), and a small send that costs a fortune in fees. Both come from the same simple causes โ and both have easy fixes. Itโs all sorted into sections below โ open only what you need. ![]()

The 30-second answer
An app demands your ID and can freeze you for one reason: it holds your coins. Hold your own keys instead โ a self-custody wallet โ and thereโs no one to ask for ID and no one who can freeze you. Free, unlimited, from anyone worldwide.
Unstoppable โ open-source and holds all your coins โ the one to grab
Trust Wallet โ biggest + easiest ยท
Cake Wallet โ most private
Trust it by logic, not reviews โ non-custodial + open-source, and you can verify it at WalletScrutiny (only ~200 of 3,000 pass).
Do it: install โ tap Receive โ share your address. Thatโs the whole thing.
Keep fees tiny: when you send USDT, pick BNB Chain or TRON โ a $15 fee becomes ~2ยข (how โ
The Tricks).
๐ง UNDERSTAND IT โ wallet ยท seed ยท gas, in plain words
- A wallet isnโt a bank. Your coins live on the blockchain (a public record thousands of computers keep). The app is just a keyring holding your key to them.
- Your address = an email for money โ people send straight to it.
- Your 12-word โseed phraseโ = the master backup. Write it on paper; restore on any phone with it. Lose it and your phone = gone forever, no reset (do it right).
- The middleman is nobody โ you are. Thatโs the freedom and the responsibility (keep the backup).
- Why the app asked for your ID: anything that holds your coins for you (Binance, Coinbase, most exchanges) is legally a middleman โ it must collect your ID and can freeze you. A self-custody wallet holds nothing of yours, so it canโt.
- What โgasโ is: the toll the blockchain network charges to process a send โ the wallet itself is $0. That toll swings wildly by network โ the next section.
๐งฐ THE TRICKS โ kill the fees & convert without the pain
Why $5 cost $20 โ and the one-tap fix. The same coin travels different โroadsโ (networks); the tolls are wildly different:
| send USDT / USDC onโฆ | typical toll | |
|---|---|---|
| $3โ15 | never for small sends | |
| ~2ยข | the cheap default | |
| ~$0.20โ1 | cheap + popular | |
| ~1ยข | near-free |
Your wallet lets you pick the network when sending โ choose BNB Chain / TRON. Check live first โ ETH gas ยท BTC fee ยท compare ยท calculator.
โIt wonโt even let me send my USDT!โ โ you need a little of that roadโs native coin for the toll (ETH ยท BNB ยท TRX) (why). A greyed-out โinsufficient fundsโ = no gas coin, not no USDT (fix).
Easiest: some wallets let you pay the toll in USDT itself (MetaMask โGas Includedโ).
Or keep a couple dollars of the native coin; on TRON, rent โEnergyโ โ a USDT send drops to ~$0.40.
Converting is a pain? Swap it yourself โ no account, no KYC: THORChain ยท ChangeNOW ยท StealthEX โ paste-and-swap across coins/networks.
โ๏ธ THE HONEST TRUTH โ so nothing ever surprises you
- Not anonymous. Public chains are traceable โ self-custody kills KYC/bans, not tracing. Real privacy = Monero.
- USDT & USDC can be frozen by the issuer even in your own wallet (Tether has frozen $3.3B) โ only native BTC ยท ETH ยท LTC ยท TRX canโt be (proof).
- Cashing out to a bank still needs a KYC exchange โ thereโs no clean anonymous cash-out. The honest ceiling.
- Why people stick with the big exchanges: convenience. Smartest move โ use both: an exchange to buy/cash-out, a self-custody wallet to hold + receive privately.
Own it, donโt rent it โ hold your own keys, pick the cheap road, and crypto stops being scary.
