No ID & no freezes — you hold the keys ·
no crazy fees — you pick the cheap network
Two walls hit everyone new to crypto: an app that suddenly demands your ID (and can freeze or ban you), and a small send that costs a fortune in fees. Both come from the same simple causes — and both have easy fixes. It’s all sorted into sections below — open only what you need. ![]()

The 30-second answer
An app demands your ID and can freeze you for one reason: it holds your coins. Hold your own keys instead — a self-custody wallet — and there’s no one to ask for ID and no one who can freeze you. Free, unlimited, from anyone worldwide.
Unstoppable — open-source and holds all your coins → the one to grab
Trust Wallet — biggest + easiest ·
Cake Wallet — most private
Trust it by logic, not reviews — non-custodial + open-source, and you can verify it at WalletScrutiny (only ~200 of 3,000 pass).
Do it: install → tap Receive → share your address. That’s the whole thing.
Keep fees tiny: when you send USDT, pick BNB Chain or TRON — a $15 fee becomes ~2¢ (how →
The Tricks).
🧠 UNDERSTAND IT — wallet · seed · gas, in plain words
- A wallet isn’t a bank. Your coins live on the blockchain (a public record thousands of computers keep). The app is just a keyring holding your key to them.
- Your address = an email for money — people send straight to it.
- Your 12-word “seed phrase” = the master backup. Write it on paper; restore on any phone with it. Lose it and your phone = gone forever, no reset (do it right).
- The middleman is nobody — you are. That’s the freedom and the responsibility (keep the backup).
- Why the app asked for your ID: anything that holds your coins for you (Binance, Coinbase, most exchanges) is legally a middleman — it must collect your ID and can freeze you. A self-custody wallet holds nothing of yours, so it can’t.
- What “gas” is: the toll the blockchain network charges to process a send — the wallet itself is $0. That toll swings wildly by network → the next section.
🧰 THE TRICKS — kill the fees & convert without the pain
Why $5 cost $20 — and the one-tap fix. The same coin travels different “roads” (networks); the tolls are wildly different:
| send USDT / USDC on… | typical toll | |
|---|---|---|
| $3–15 | never for small sends | |
| ~2¢ | the cheap default | |
| ~$0.20–1 | cheap + popular | |
| ~1¢ | near-free |
Your wallet lets you pick the network when sending — choose BNB Chain / TRON. Check live first → ETH gas · BTC fee · compare · calculator.
“It won’t even let me send my USDT!” — you need a little of that road’s native coin for the toll (ETH · BNB · TRX) (why). A greyed-out “insufficient funds” = no gas coin, not no USDT (fix).
Easiest: some wallets let you pay the toll in USDT itself (MetaMask “Gas Included”).
Or keep a couple dollars of the native coin; on TRON, rent “Energy” → a USDT send drops to ~$0.40.
Converting is a pain? Swap it yourself — no account, no KYC: THORChain · ChangeNOW · StealthEX — paste-and-swap across coins/networks.
⚖️ THE HONEST TRUTH — so nothing ever surprises you
- Not anonymous. Public chains are traceable — self-custody kills KYC/bans, not tracing. Real privacy = Monero.
- USDT & USDC can be frozen by the issuer even in your own wallet (Tether has frozen $3.3B) — only native BTC · ETH · LTC · TRX can’t be (proof).
- Cashing out to a bank still needs a KYC exchange — there’s no clean anonymous cash-out. The honest ceiling.
- Why people stick with the big exchanges: convenience. Smartest move → use both: an exchange to buy/cash-out, a self-custody wallet to hold + receive privately.
Own it, don’t rent it — hold your own keys, pick the cheap road, and crypto stops being scary.
