Available Piper Hindi voices:

  • rohan (male)
  • a few community Indic voices

Or convert voices from:

  • Coqui TTS
  • IndicTTS dataset
  • VITS models

Many people now convert VITS voices → Piper format. and
Try this, it seems that Piper voices are limited Hindi, hope this helps

  1. HuggingFace community models
  2. GitHub forks of Piper
  3. Home-Assistant voice threads
  4. Discord servers for local-AI TTS

Rare voices often appear there before they reach official repos.

Right now there are no publicly listed Piper Hindi voices named Madhur or Swara in the main rhasspy/piper-voices repos or standard community collections, so you likely won’t find ready-made downloads for those exact legacy models anymore. huggingface

What is available for Hindi in Piper

  • Official Piper Hindi voice: hi_IN/rohan (male), hosted in the rhasspy/piper-voices repo on Hugging Face. onehack
  • A few “Indic” community voices show up in discussions and collections, but they are not named Madhur/Swara and are scattered across forks and threads. community.home-assistant
  • GitHub and issue discussions confirm that Hindi support has been work-in-progress and relatively limited, with many people still relying on external datasets like AI4Bharat Indic-TTS to train or convert their own Piper voices. github

Where to look for rare / old Piper voices

Since official listings don’t show Madhur/Swara, your best chance is community archives where people share custom voices:

  • GitHub:
    • Search in rhasspy/piper issues and discussions, and in forks that bundle custom voices (people often attach .onnx and .json there). blog.hashtron
  • Home Assistant community:
    • Piper is popular there; users post collections of pre-trained voices and links to extra repos that don’t appear in the main docs. reddit
  • Hugging Face:
    • Look beyond rhasspy/piper-voices for community models; search “Piper Hindi”, “hi_IN”, “Indic TTS Piper”. Some may have generic names but contain Hindi voices. huggingface
  • Discord / Reddit:
    • Local-AI and TTS Discord servers and Reddit threads (e.g., r/opensource, accessibility communities using Piper) sometimes host or link to custom voices that were never officially indexed. reddit

If Madhur and Swara were private or shared only inside a closed group, they may simply not be archived anywhere public anymore.

If you cannot find Madhur/Swara

If those exact models are gone, you have two options:

  • Use current Hindi / Indic voices that are available for Piper (e.g., rohan plus any Hindi voices you can find in community repos or HA forums). huggingface
  • Recreate something similar by training or converting from another TTS:
    • Pipelines exist to convert Coqui TTS, VITS, or Indic-TTS–based voices into Piper format; several blog posts and GitHub guides show how to do this using Indic datasets (AI4Bharat, IndicVoices-R, etc.). arxiv

If you remember where you originally got Madhur and Swara (GitHub repo, Discord, a specific tool’s bundled voices), tell me that source and I can help you search that ecosystem more precisely or suggest a recreation path.

What platform are you running Piper TTS on right now (Windows, Linux, Home Assistant, something else)?

Thnak you. exploration had stop. piper hindi with priyamvada and pratham are not realistics. rohan i did not try, will do now. madhur and swara found in edge tts. my require is multiple indic voices. found a few online free ttfs service that do very good voices and genros char allow. a few use azure voice too. will make use of. if my project become success i switch to pay tts. i have a small rtx3060 12gb vram, zero code knowlege. i depend on a chatgpt to help guide. so my opton is very limit.

Yeah, I saw your post hunting for those two specific older Hindi models — Madhur and Swara. A lot of people used them back when Piper was first blowing up, and they just disappeared from the official collection.

I checked the latest Piper repo, Hugging Face, GitHub, and community archives as of April 2026. Here’s exactly what’s going on and what you can actually use right now.

:chart_decreasing: What Happened to Madhur and Swara

Those two voices were part of the early experimental/community batch. They never got added to the cleaned-up official v1.0+ release and are no longer hosted anywhere public. No mirrors, no old archives, and nothing turns up in current searches or the VOICES.md list. They’re simply gone from circulation.

The only Hindi voices officially available and maintained right now are:

  • pratham (medium)

  • priyamvada (medium – female)

  • rohan (medium – newer male)

:rocket: Direct Download Links for the Working Hindi Voices

Here are the exact files you need (both the .onnx model and the matching .onnx.json config). Drop them into your Piper voices folder and they work instantly.

1. hi_IN-pratham-medium (very natural all-rounder)

2. hi_IN-priyamvada-medium (clear female voice)

3. hi_IN-rohan-medium (solid male voice)

Want to hear them first? Check the official samples here: Piper Voice Samples – Hindi

:hammer_and_wrench: Other Useful Options If You Need More Hindi Voices

:warning: Quick Tip

Always download both the .onnx and .onnx.json files together and keep the exact same filename (just different extensions). That’s the only way Piper loads them properly.

:light_bulb: Quick Hits

The three voices above are the current standard and sound pretty close to what a lot of people liked about the older models.
No working links exist for the exact Madhur or Swara files anymore, so these are your best bet without having to train anything yourself.

That should get you sorted fast.
