🧪 The Free Trading Lab ▸ Test Money ▸ Real Charts ▸ Zero Risk

:lab_coat: THE FREE TRADING LAB — test money, real charts, and the five checks before a single dollar :microscope:

digraph Lab { rankdir=TB; bgcolor="#fbfcfc"; nodesep=0.4; ranksep=0.38; node [shape=box, style="rounded,filled", fillcolor="#eef2f4", color="#20303c", fontcolor="#20303c", fontname="Helvetica", fontsize=17, margin="0.42,0.18"]; edge [color="#a5c8a0", penwidth=2.0]; rules [shape=note, label="🧪 LAB RULES · test money, real charts, wallet shut", fillcolor="#a5c8a0", fontsize=15]; s1 [label="🖱️ 1 · download OctoBot, double-click it", fillcolor="#20303c", fontcolor="#ffffff"]; s2 [label="▶️ 2 · press the paper trading button"]; s3 [label="🎛️ 3 · pick Grid or DCA, ready-made"]; s4 [label="🌍 4 · switch on a free paper account"]; s5 [label="📓 5 · log every trade for four to eight weeks"]; s6 [label="🔓 6 · turn the latch, real money, your amount"]; rules -> s1 -> s2 -> s3 -> s4 -> s5 -> s6; }

The lab costs you nothing. Step six is the only one that ever does — and you decide when to reach it.

🧪 The lab bench — every free door, in the order to open them

The bots themselves — Pionex, OctoBot, Freqtrade and the rest, with copy-paste setup — already sit in our own earlier drop: 10 Free Trading Bots. This one is the laboratory you build around them, and the audit.

:computer_mouse: Step 1 and 2 — OctoBot, and the paper button beside it

  • :octopus: github.com/Drakkar-Software/OctoBot — the download-and-double-click option, with Grid and DCA already built in. Its setup is walked through line by line in the earlier drop :compass:.
  • :cloud: octobot.cloud — the part that is genuinely new here: the hosted version runs paper trading free and unlimited, with no exchange account and no API key of any kind. A cloud paper run asks for an Extend click every two weeks.

:globe_showing_europe_africa: Step 4 — a free paper account, open from anywhere

Where Account needed What it simulates
Alpaca paper trading An email address — their docs say anyone globally can open a paper-only account $100,000 on live US stocks, options and crypto
Binance spot testnet A GitHub login Live spot orders, balances granted automatically
Binance futures testnet A separate signup USDT-margined futures on virtual balance
Bybit demo trading A Bybit login to switch modes $1,000,000 of demo funds on live data
OKX demo trading An OKX account Simulated spot and futures crypto
MetaTrader 5 demo Nothing Live forex and CFD prices with virtual money, worldwide
TradingView paper trading Nothing beyond an account $100,000 simulated on every plan, including Free

Two to skip: Coinbase’s Advanced sandbox returns canned static responses, so it tests your plumbing and never your strategy, and Kraken’s demo futures page announces its own decommission from 14 July 2026.

:control_knobs: Step 3 — the no-code benches, for anyone who would rather click

  • :window: StockSharp Strategy Designer — free, and you assemble a strategy by mouse from 166 indicators and 384 connectors, then backtest, optimise and emulate in the same window.
  • :milky_way: github.com/Superalgos/Superalgos — one packaged download, everything visual in a browser, paper trading built in. Budget a weekend for its own visual language.
  • :mage: MetaTrader 5 MQL5 Wizard — MetaQuotes’ own builder, and their page says it plainly: “you no longer need any programming experience.”
  • :coin: coinrule.com — the free plan is one paper agent with $10,000 virtual, no card and no exchange link.

:snake: Step 1, the terminal route — one install, then dry-run

:bar_chart: Step 5 — the free data you test against

  • :package: data.binance.vision — no login, no key, price history going back to 2020.
  • :chart_increasing: stooq.com/db/h — free bulk historical files, stocks and indices.
  • :electric_plug: CCXT — one library, fetchOHLCV across a hundred exchanges.
  • :snow_capped_mountain: Dukascopy historical data — free forex price history at the finest detail — every single price change.
  • :prohibited: Skip Yahoo Finance for bulk pulls: downloading historical data now sits behind a paid gold subscription.

:satellite: Keeping it running — free, forever

  • :cloud: Oracle Cloud Always Free — genuinely free forever, ARM Ampere A1 up to 4 cores and 24 GB. The real hurdle is host capacity, not billing.
  • :gear: GitHub Actions — unmetered on public repos, and cron suspends itself after 60 days of inactivity, so it suits scheduled tasks rather than a 24/7 trader.
  • :strawberry: A Raspberry Pi — not free to buy, and after that it costs nothing at all, forever. The most durable free option in practice.
  • :cross_mark: Gone: Fly.io’s free tier, Railway’s free tier, and the old Heroku and Render free dynos.
🛡️ The five checks, and what the numbers really say

:magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Five checks before a single dollar moves

  • :page_facing_up: A free tier you can see — no card asked for at the door.
  • :test_tube: A paper or demo mode that ships inside it — the test bench is built in, never bolted on.
  • :scroll: Open source, or a licence you can read — the code and the terms both stay visible.
  • :bar_chart: A record you can verify yourself — your own notebook beats anybody’s screenshot.
  • :link: No referral link steering you — a free tool stands on its own.

:chart_decreasing: The numbers, because a bench without them is a hobby

  • :bar_chart: Europe’s regulator ESMA reports that 74–89% of retail accounts typically lose money, with average losses per investor of €1,600 to €29,000.
  • :brazil: In complete-population data, 97% of Brazilians who day-traded for 300 days or more lost money — only 0.4% earned more than a bank teller.
  • :taiwan: In Taiwan, under 1% of day traders were predictably profitable after fees.
  • :microscope: A 2026 review tested trend, oscillator, candlestick and volume rules: four families refuted, two inconclusive, none supported.
  • :brain: Overfitting explains most of it. On five years of daily data, roughly 45 variations can be tested before a result stops meaning anything.
  • :graduation_cap: The best free place to learn the difference is QuantConnect’s learning centre — free, structured, and built around robust design rather than fitted curves.

:receipt: And the one habit that carries all of it — write every paper trade in one notebook: date, entry, exit, fee, result. Four to eight weeks of that turns a demo into evidence.
