Try to open with WinRAR.
Usually, a .z01 file comes together with a .zip file and possibly a .z02, .z03 etc. the reason is that one single file can only contain up to 2Gb of data. In case of a larger dataset the data can be compressed in multiple files.
Your .z01 file needs not to be opened separately. Just opening the .zip file should suffice since most compression programs will consider the collection of volumes as one compressed dataset. In other words: if you view the .zip file’s content it will automatically also show the corresponding .z01’s content.

You need a suitable software like WinZip to open a Z01 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message “How do you want to open this file?” or “Windows cannot open this file” or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your Z01 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click “Open with” and choose an application. You can also display a Z01 file directly in the browser. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. Z01 files are often referred to as WinZip compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
