It's Not Just CrowdStrike - the Cyber Sector is Vulnerable ๐Ÿ”’

Summary:

  1. Concentration Risk in Cybersecurity: A recent global IT outage highlights the vulnerability of the cybersecurity sector, where 15 companies control 62% of the market. In endpoint security, Microsoft and CrowdStrike dominate half the market.

  2. Lack of Oversight: Ciaran Martin, former head of the UKโ€™s National Cyber Security Centre, notes that no single body analyzes technical failures to improve tech infrastructure resilience, unlike the US Cyber Safety Review Board, which reviews large cyber attacks.

  3. Call for Diversification and Redundancy: The incident underscores the need for clients, governments, and regulators to consider building more diversification and redundancy into their systems to prevent future global IT outages.

Well, everything that is connected to the Internet is vulnerableโ€ฆ our phones, laptops, smartwatch, smart fridge, smart light, etc.

As I my self work in Cyber Security field, and the Crowdstrikeโ€™s fault in configuration file of their Falcon agent led to the outage and this was quite a major outage after WannaCry ransomware attack. Though this incident was not a security incident at all.

Well, it can happen with anyoneโ€ฆ Not just Crowdstrike. Even major giant companies like Microsoft can cause a global outage.

So, if you try to touch kernel level of an Operating System and something bad happens with it then a BSOD will happen. As Kernel is a heart of any Operating Systemโ€ฆ you wonโ€™t play around with it. An OS will then reboot from a failure.

I have known Crowdstrike personally as we use their endpoint security product to prevent the org. from a security incident. And no doubt Crowdstrike is a leader in cyber security industry with their immense telemetry, threat intelligence and threat detection level.

But yes, this outage has caused million or even billions of losses around the globeโ€ฆ and this should not repeat in future..
