🎨 OpenDesign β€” the Free Claude Design Alternative That Runs on the AI Agent You Already Pay For

You already pay for one AI tool. This one makes it design for you, and costs nothing.

OpenDesign is the open-source alternative to Claude Design β€” a local-first desktop app for macOS and Windows that hands the design job to the coding agent already running on your machine.

:link: github.com/nexu-io/open-design β€” Apache-2.0, 93.6k stars, 10.7k forks.

No new subscription. It works BYOK, driving what you already have: Claude Code Β· Codex Β· Cursor Β· DeepSeek Harness Β· Qwen Β· Copilot Β· Kimi and 26 local command-line agents, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

And it gives you real files, not share links: HTML Β· PDF Β· PPTX Β· MP4, saved on your own disk.

🎨 What it builds
  • Prototypes β€” web, desktop and mobile, previewed in a sandboxed frame before anything is exported.
  • Live dashboards and artifacts β€” working pages, not flat mockups.
  • Slide decks β€” straight out as .pptx, ready to open and present.
  • Images and video, plus HyperFrames motion graphics for the moving pieces.
🧩 The part that makes it yours β€” DESIGN.md

Your brand written as a plain file the agent reads: colours, type, spacing, rules. Every artifact it builds afterwards comes out in your design system instead of generic AI styling.

Around it sit composable skills, rendering templates and plugins β€” a folder of capabilities your agent can read, write and remix, rather than a closed feature list somebody else decides for you.

Why it matters: the loop Claude Design keeps behind a paywall β€” discover the brief, lock the direction, stream the artifact, critique it, deliver β€” is here as an open filesystem your own agent drives. The intelligence you already pay for; this gives it hands. :hand_with_fingers_splayed:

i hope it benefits all the community

Local-first is the part I like most here β€” handing the design job to the agent already running on your machine is smarter than paying for yet another subscription. The DESIGN.md idea is worth stealing even on its own; a single file with your brand tokens and layout rules cuts out so much back-and-forth. I am curious how it handles iteration though, since design work is usually a feedback loop rather than one-shot generation.
