No ID & no freezes β you hold the keys Β·
no crazy fees β you pick the cheap network
Two walls hit everyone new to crypto: an app that suddenly demands your ID (and can freeze or ban you), and a small send that costs a fortune in fees. Both come from the same simple causes β and both have easy fixes. Itβs all sorted into sections below β open only what you need. ![]()

The 30-second answer
An app demands your ID and can freeze you for one reason: it holds your coins. Hold your own keys instead β a self-custody wallet β and thereβs no one to ask for ID and no one who can freeze you. Free, unlimited, from anyone worldwide.
Unstoppable β open-source and holds all your coins β the one to grab
Trust Wallet β biggest + easiest Β·
Cake Wallet β most private
Trust it by logic, not reviews β non-custodial + open-source, and you can verify it at WalletScrutiny (only ~200 of 3,000 pass).
Do it: install β tap Receive β share your address. Thatβs the whole thing.
Keep fees tiny: when you send USDT, pick BNB Chain or TRON β a $15 fee becomes ~2Β’ (how β
The Tricks).
π§ UNDERSTAND IT β wallet Β· seed Β· gas, in plain words
- A wallet isnβt a bank. Your coins live on the blockchain (a public record thousands of computers keep). The app is just a keyring holding your key to them.
- Your address = an email for money β people send straight to it.
- Your 12-word βseed phraseβ = the master backup. Write it on paper; restore on any phone with it. Lose it and your phone = gone forever, no reset (do it right).
- The middleman is nobody β you are. Thatβs the freedom and the responsibility (keep the backup).
- Why the app asked for your ID: anything that holds your coins for you (Binance, Coinbase, most exchanges) is legally a middleman β it must collect your ID and can freeze you. A self-custody wallet holds nothing of yours, so it canβt.
- What βgasβ is: the toll the blockchain network charges to process a send β the wallet itself is $0. That toll swings wildly by network β the next section.
π§° THE TRICKS β kill the fees & convert without the pain
Why $5 cost $20 β and the one-tap fix. The same coin travels different βroadsβ (networks); the tolls are wildly different:
| send USDT / USDC on⦠| typical toll | |
|---|---|---|
| $3β15 | never for small sends | |
| ~2Β’ | the cheap default | |
| ~$0.20β1 | cheap + popular | |
| ~1Β’ | near-free |
Your wallet lets you pick the network when sending β choose BNB Chain / TRON. Check live first β ETH gas Β· BTC fee Β· compare Β· calculator.
βIt wonβt even let me send my USDT!β β you need a little of that roadβs native coin for the toll (ETH Β· BNB Β· TRX) (why). A greyed-out βinsufficient fundsβ = no gas coin, not no USDT (fix).
Easiest: some wallets let you pay the toll in USDT itself (MetaMask βGas Includedβ).
Or keep a couple dollars of the native coin; on TRON, rent βEnergyβ β a USDT send drops to ~$0.40.
Converting is a pain? Swap it yourself β no account, no KYC: THORChain Β· ChangeNOW Β· StealthEX β paste-and-swap across coins/networks.
βοΈ THE HONEST TRUTH β so nothing ever surprises you
- Not anonymous. Public chains are traceable β self-custody kills KYC/bans, not tracing. Real privacy = Monero.
- USDT & USDC can be frozen by the issuer even in your own wallet (Tether has frozen $3.3B) β only native BTC Β· ETH Β· LTC Β· TRX canβt be (proof).
- Cashing out to a bank still needs a KYC exchange β thereβs no clean anonymous cash-out. The honest ceiling.
- Why people stick with the big exchanges: convenience. Smartest move β use both: an exchange to buy/cash-out, a self-custody wallet to hold + receive privately.
Own it, donβt rent it β hold your own keys, pick the cheap road, and crypto stops being scary.
