Microsoft wants $200 a license. These volume keys are sitting on thousands of activations.
MAK = Multiple Activation Key β one bulk key built to activate many PCs off a shared pool. Personal builds, client rigs, side-gig machines β one paste each, unlimited setups, zero subscription trap.
Key threw an error? Itβs not dead β Windows spat out a code and nobody read it. Every code = a different one-line fix. And when the shared pool finally runs dry, thereβs a free, permanent route that never needs a key again.
Open an admin Command Prompt β run slmgr /dlv (shows your edition + license state). Now match the code you got:
0xC004C020 β that keyβs shared activations are used up. Grab the next key, or the other Sub Type. 0xC004C008 β key canβt be used on this machine (already burned here). Next key. 0xC004C003 β keyβs blocked on Microsoftβs side. Dead, move on. 0xC004E016 / 0xC004F050 β wrong edition. A Pro key wonβt touch Home / Enterprise / N. Confirm slmgr /dlv says Pro first.
π€ 'How do I use the Sub Type?' β you don't, here's what it actually is
The Sub Type ([TH]X19-98805, [TH]X19-98801) isnβt something you type anywhere. Itβs just Microsoftβs batch label telling you which pool the key pulls from β 98805 = the 7500 pool, 98801 = the 1450 pool. Paste either key normally. If it throws 0xC004C020, switch to the other one. Thatβs the whole trick.
π Check a key BEFORE you burn it β stop wasting good pulls
A MAKβs remaining count is public info. Check it and skip the dead ones instead of guessing:
PidKeyTool β pulls a keyβs exact remaining count straight from Microsoftβs own server.
winkeycheck β batch-check a whole .txt of keys; tells βblockedβ apart from βjust emptyβ.
βΎοΈ Pool's dry? Mint your OWN license β free, permanent, no key
A product key is only one way to get a license. When every shared pool is drained, make your own:
MAS β Microsoft Activation Scripts β one command. The HWID option ties a genuine digital license to your hardware forever β survives clean reinstalls, no key needed. This is the real answer.
Activating a lot of machines? Self-host a tiny KMS server: docker-kms or go-kms. Runs on a NAS or router and activates every PC on your network.
π Two 'fixes' that are DEAD in 2025 β quit wasting time on them
Half the guides online still push these. Both are gone:
Phone activation β Microsoft killed the call-in Confirmation-ID path in 2025. It just bounces you to a webpage now. (proof)
KMS38 (the activate-until-2038 trick) β patched out by late-2025 updates and pulled from MAS. (details) Use HWID instead.
π Where this actually saves your ass
Reinstalling Windows for the 5th time on client builds β HWID re-activates itself the second itβs online. Zero keys.
Flipping a second-hand laptop? Clean install goes permanent-genuine, looks factory-fresh to the buyer.
Home lab with 6 VMs β one self-hosted KMS and every one turns Pro.
That PC nagging βActivate Windowsβ over your wallpaper β gone in 10 seconds, for good.
Building a rig for family across the country β send them one command, no key to lose or leak.
A key is a rental. A license is yours β quit renting what you can just keep.
